I just had one, and it was made by hubby, but it was good. French-toasted
blueberry bagels. I never would have thought of it, but it was really good.

Sounds like you're better off for decent chocolate in the Emirates
than us poor exiles in the US. My brother lives in Dubai and gets
all sorts of english goodies.
Only another two years and we're off back to England where
unschoolers are more the norm :-)

Oh yes finally some GOOD chocolate again. Roses, Quality Street, Crunchie
Bars, Mars, cheese and onion crisps, salad cream, baked beans, real
sausages....
It's lovely being able to get all the old stuff but not have to bring it
home in the rain and cold. Although we did have some kind of cyclone
weather the day before and it poured with rain for an hour and flooded
everywhere (all the buildings leak).
Where does your brother work in Dubai?
Are you moving back permanantly? I miss it but could not handle the taxes
and low salaries (in my field). I don't know how we would afford to live.

No idea where my borther works. He does something in television
and film production.
Yeah, we moved to the states to escape the low salaries. My
husband is a physicist and was paid less than a store manager
depsite his PhD. Unfortunately, when we were offered 3 times his
UK salary to move to north Virginia, the company failed to mention
that north Virginia is three times more expensive than England.
Oops.
They alaso didn't mention the restrictive home schooling laws here
that require testing yearly. That said, I haven't got around to
registering yet with the school board so we comtinue unschooling
just like we did in England but without the support I had there. It
really is school-at-home land here.

So, when we move within the US next year I want
mild summers
no ticks
snow in winter
unschoolers
cheap houses
public transport
no testing or curriculum required

I'll ask for Val Kilmer too but I'm prepared to compromise on that
last point ;-)

Tell me about it. Academia is not that well paid in the US but at least I
can afford to feed the kids unlike in the UK.
But cheap housing... Are you sure about that? I was shocked last September
when I was back last at how expensive housing was now. In some places it's
tripled. I wish we'd held onto our house there.

Well there you go. I mean what can the do -- deport you??

You know I've lived all over the place and found that each country has it's
own ups and downs. I haven't found anywhere that I think is perfect
(although I am still open to suggestions:) Constant rain, poll tax, the
national health service, trains that don't run on time, and hey television
licenses -- not fun at times. But then there are the good things you point
out. I think it's all just a matter of what makes each person the happiest.

I have friends here who never want to leave and love Abu Dhabi. I look and
think "are you crazy?" It's nice for a few years but 145 degrees in the
summer - blah! And government hassles, crazy drivers, very stinky people
pushing you out of line (I have first trimester nausea at the moment so
this stands out:) and all the other joys of such a large city.

Of course. If you need a cheap house its cos you are poor. So you
can't afford a car. It's middle class suburbs that lack public
transport cos people don't need it. Leastways it is in England.
Mind you, public transport is extensive in England and Europe and
generally subsidised by the Government.

I thought you meant in the U.S.!! <g>

Seems cities are expensive, small towns aren't;
cities have public transportation, small towns don't even have taxis.

The cheap housing residents have to get to work caring
for the expensive housing residents, somehow

Yep -- and some days we get almost 100% humidity (it's desert but we live
on the ocean). It looks as if it's raining because water runs down the
outside of the windows. Can make for really bad hair days!

People travel to Oman because there are mountains and it's only in the low
100s!
