We have one. She seems happy enough, but she also spends an hour or two
out of her cage with people at least 4 days a week... if you're rat won't
be getting that much play-time then maybe 2 would be better. We may get
another anyway..

Right now she's in a cracked 10 gallon tank, which I consider the
absolute minimum size. She has lots of stuff in there to play with, old
socks, boxes, toilet paper tubes, etc. We have a three-story cage (about
the same width and depth) that we need to clean up for her, I think that
will be much better.

IME female rats don't smell, only male rats do. Mary (short for Mary-Bo
Parrot, because she rides on Cacie's shoulder like a parrot much of the
time) doesn't and neither does her cage, people never guess we have a rat
until they see the cage. We should clean it ionce a week but even when it
goes past that it doesn't smell...

Rats are wonderful!

I think it's best to have more than one rat at a time because they are
so bright and social and get easily bored, but one could work if you
were really committed to giving it plenty of attention. I always used
Carefresh for bedding, and the California breeders recommended it, but
we did have a couple of respiratory issues, so I'll look into aspen
shavings when we start again. I live in VA, but I had an almost
impossible time finding any local breeders, so I called CA everytime I
had a major question. I did finally find 2 semi-local breeders for when
we get more rats. We never had a problem with our male rats fighting
with each other, but the breeders told me we were lucky on that score.
Oh, it's nice to find other rat fans! I get so tired of people where I
live being so grossed out by them. I subscribe to AFRMA's magazine, and
it has really interesting rat information in it.
