>>other frustration is a lack of interesting chapter books for little onesI did a list of books before if you'd like to try the archives. Here are
>>who are still young enough to get scared by, well, scary topics,<<
some of the ones I can remember.
Charlottes'Web
Stuart Little
Mr. Popper's Penguins
Pippi Longstocking
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Magic Treehouse series
Flat Stanley
Invisible Stanley
The Indian in the Cupboard series
Also look at books by Beverly Cleary, Avi, Roald Dahl, and Judy Blume. Some
will be more appropriate at this age than others.
Happy reading.

I listen to them *all* the time! Grade 9--unschoolers might like that!
Really captures the crazy feel of those school days.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane,

Cacie and I saw them live, when she was 4 or so. It was pretty funny to
hear her telling everyone about it later...

In addition to Pippi Longstocking, ANYTHING by Astrid Lindgren is fabulous.
Ronia the Robber's Daughter remains a great favourite of mine. It's
beautiful. Also, besides The Indian in the Cupboard books, Lynn Reid Banks
has written a great many other wonderful books - The Fairy Rebel, I Houdini,
the Magic Hare, and more.
