My twelve year old son has his first role model (someone he identifies as a
person he'd like to emulate) and it's from tv.

It's Tyne Daly's character on Judging Amy, and he thinks he might like to be
a social worker.

Julian has wanted to be a vet since he was very, very young. Recently,
however, he has reevaluated that because he isn't sure that, as a strong
ethical vegetarian, he'd be able to do the things (dissection, euthanasia,
etc.) that he'd probably have to do to get through vet school.

He REALLY relates to this character, and loves that her job is to rescue
children in trouble. He may learn that being a social worker DOESN'T always
look like that, but for now I am terribly impressed that he's found this
image of a powerful, giving (and complex) idea of who he'd like to be.

Maxine is my hero too. And I have a degree in social work! Unfortunately, no TV show can really relate the awful drudgery and horror of being a social worker for DHS. I chose a different path, but my friends who worked there struggled so hard with what they saw. However, a person like Maxine, who lets it out and isn't afraid for people to not like her, could do so much good. I just love her.h

Hi Kathryn, Jacli here :)
Just had to say it sounds like your son is a pretty cool
kid.
(and no its not just because I think Tyne Daly is one of
the best actresses to have ever been on tv or because I'm
a huge closet fan of Cagney and Lacey...)

Take care, Jacli
