We've started a Friday night classic movies tradition. So far we've
done The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
(where Spain stands in for New Mexico :-) so we're not too far into
it yet ;-).

Since Kat doesn't have a head full of classic movies to choose from
that we haven't all watched already, she said she wanted to pick a
light hearted heist or caper movie like The Sting or The Italian Job.
Anyone have favorites to share?

By caper will sleuth do?

I like the Thin Man series - they really are light hearted - William Powell
and Myrna Loy.

The Edward G. Robinson movie "Larceny Inc" (1942) is light hearted.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034965/

For a more offbeat story about criminals that is a sweet holiday film the
Humphrey Bogart film "We're No Angels" (1955) is also cute. Beware of the
recent film of the same title (de Niro, Sean Penn) which is not a remake
(and I hear was a turkey).

Yes! "Sneakers" Listen to this cast: Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford,
Ben Kingsley, Dan Ackroyd, David Straithairn (my favorite), River
Phoenix (maybe his last role?), Mary McDonnell...

I think I've seen it five times.

This guy is in everything.

I had never heard of him before, until the movie "Good Night and
Good Luck" for which he was nominated for an Oscar. I'm thinking "ok
i've never even seen this guy before" until i realized he is in ALOT
of movies i've seen,, and didnt even know it:

Matewan
Bob Roberts
Lost in Yonkers
A Dangerous Woman
The River Wild
Losing Isaiah
Delores Claiborne
Blue Car

Those are just movies I've seen...he's in tons more. He gets around!

CONFIDENCE!!! It's a great, GREAT movie!! And I love Edward Burns. Great
twists and turns, surprises, and wonderful acting (Andy Garcia, Dustin
Hoffman, Rachel Weisz, Edward Burns, Paul Giamatti) It does have some
nudity/sexuality, not sure if that's a problem.

YES!! He is awesome!!! And in every role he is soooooo different.

I feel the same way about Paul Giamatti, he was this guy that was in a
gazillion movies but no one knew who he was. We love him too :o)

The Lady Killers (1955) with Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Cecil Parker

The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) Alec Guinness, Stanley Holloway, Sid James

There are the Oceans Eleven movies the old one (1960) with Frank Sinatra,
and the newer one ( 2001) with George Clooney and the sequel, Oceans Twelve.
(which I haven't seen.)

I forgot "Bottle Rocket" from 1996, directed by Wes Anderson (The Life

I have a book sitting here, checked out from the library, called "Hey!
It's That Guy!: the Fametracker.com Guide to Character Actors." Both
those guys are in it :-) It's a fun book. A couple of my favorites
aren't in it, because they've become too well known: William H. Macy
and Chris Cooper. Oh, and I got to see John C. Reilly live around
Christmas, when he performed with Aimee Mann; stood right next to the
stage while he did the narration for "Mr. Grinch."

The Great Muppet Caper <g>

I remember enjoying the more recent version of "The Thomas Crown
Affair," and "Entrapment," famous for Catherine Zeta Jones's laser
alarm scene.

He's in almost all John Sayles films. I recommend Passion Fish
especially.

Man, Paul Giamatti. I swear i have the weirdest crushes.

His performance in Sideways was soooo good. There is one scene, where
he runs into his ex-wife (whom he thinks he has a chance of getting
back together with)and she says she's pg by her new guy
(husband?)...and his expression changes ever so slightly. He
congratulates her, but for just a second you can tell he is totally
crushed. Really good actor.

Ooo, cool, thanks!

Kat's got a nice list to use now :-)

I hadn't heard of Sneakers or Confidence. But I do remember Lady
Killers and Lavender Hill Mob. I'd forgotton about them. :-)

On a whim I put heist movies into a google search and found this:
http://www.rinkworks.com/movies/i/g_heist.shtml

And looking through the list reminded me of the movie The Grey Fox
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085622/) with Richard Farnsworth. It may be
more Western than heist, but I remember seeing it at the Dundee movie
theater in Omaha with my parents and really liking the way the story built
and loving Richard Farnsworth. But I haven't seen it since, and I don't know
if I would still enjoy it or if the enjoyment was wrapped up with it being a
night out.

Heat or The War Wagon, Marty suggests.
Of heat, Marty says "It has a semi-young Val Kilmer."

The War Wagon is a western heist.

Nicole Paluszek

The Great Muppet Caper, I second that one. A Fish
Called Wanda would be my favorite on the really
lighthearted side. Some of the Jackie Chan movies,
can't remember titles.
A bit heavier but still with some funny moments, 60
Seconds - I think that's what it was called, big car
theft heist with Nicholas Cage.

Thanks! Though it's interesting that few of the movies people
mentioned are there. It must not be a category people remember when
they're categorizing movies.

I'd been wanting to see the original Italian Job and noticing it got
4.5 stars moves that up the list :-)

The remake of Italian Job is fun, too. We want a Super Cooper!

I really love the movie Snatch, directed by Guy Ritchie. Some of it's pretty
intense (bare knuckle boxing, dog fighting), but it's equally, intensely
hilarious (lots of folks looking for the same diamond and bizarre
coincidences) - not for the sensitive folk. Subtitles are a must! Brad Pitt
is especially wonderful in this one.

A little late, but:
Small Time Crooks. It's got Tracey Ullman, Woody Allen, um... and other people whose names I can't think of. Very funny, though.
