Hi!
I guess this would be the *perfect* time to introduce myself, as
I have been lurking here for a few weeks- but I just hadn't found the
right opportunity to say "hi!" until now.... so here goes...
My name is Buttercup, and I am married to Zippy Cootiefanny! We have
two glorious children who are ~newly named~ Lumpy (8yog) and Flunky
(6yob). I have to admit though, my DH's personality DOES somewhat
fit his new name, and so I think I will begin calling him by it just
as soon as he gets back this weekend from his trip to Florida. (I
hope he doesn't get offended by his adorable new name!) LOL!!!
We live in the Fredericksburg area of Virginia, and we have two dogs
amazingly named- Flunky and Flunky. ;-) I suppose it will be
confusing when I call them by their new names, especially since my
son is also named Flunky... but oh well, maybe I shall call them~
Flunky #1, Flunky #2 and Flunky #3. Or then again, I could just call
them Flunky, Flunky Jr. and Flunky Sr. (Whatever! I'll work out
those little details later....)
Anyhoo, the Cootiefanny family has been unschooling for about 18
months now, and during that time we have all grown and changed in so
many wonderful ways. The kids and I have found so much joy and
happiness since we embraced this lifestyle, and that has meant the
world to me! Lumpy went to PS Kindergarten and had a rough time
there, but has been THRIVING since we let go of all of the
"schoolish" notions. Flunky has never been to school, and is doing
very well just being himself every day~ with no pressure to DO or BE
anything in particular.
Both Cootiefanny children love to learn, and
they joyfully pursue whatever their hearts desire- and THAT is SO
wonderful! (I sure wish *I* had been unschooled as a child!) I
actually *see* them learning new things every day, and it's cool.
Here's a little bit about what we do with our time-- my kids like to
make artsy~crafty things with me (and by themselves), and we love to
read and watch movies together. We spend a lot of time at the
library, and we enjoy *getting out* whenever we can. Usually, we do
things locally, BUT we just went to the Live and Learn Conference in
South Carolina- and we had a blast! It was incredible to be able to
meet so many other unschoolers. And of course, nobody looked like I
had pictured them in my mind beforehand! (Isn't it interesting how
that works?) Anyway, my kids and I now have so many happy memories
from our time there, we can't wait to go next year!!!
Back to the description of my family.... the kids are very interested
right now in "Science" (as they call it, because of ZOOM on PBS) and
in learning to cook, and they are wanting to do experiments all the
time these days! They are also into Yu-gi-oh cards and Pokemon
figures, and Lego's and Lincoln Logs, and Max Steel and Medabots, and
tons of other things.
My kids are big-hearted, deep-thinking, highly
sensitive people like myself, and we've all had to learn how to
support each other's temperments, rather than spend our time being so
affected by each other... LOL! (It's a gift to be able to HAVE all
this time together since they aren't in school, but it also means
working on our interpersonal relations.) I'm really lucky that my
kids ARE the best of friends, though!
Well, I'm certainly rambling.... and it's after 3 O'clock in the
morning, so I should go to bed anyway- but I just wanted to introduce
myself first. I really got a kick out of the "funny name" post!
