Hi Deborah,

I just live a few blocks from where you used to live then. I'm in Santee,
and go to this hilly open area to hike. I'm trying to get ready for my
attempted climb of Mt. Whitney in Aug, and then my son Devin (24) and I plan
to spend the month of July hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Doing the trail
has been a life long dream. I have often seem coyotes and deer while hiking.

I used to dream of living in Santee or Julian. We lived in Bonita just
before moving to Portland, it was "almost" like living in that area because
it was more rural.

I thought the weather in San Diego county was monotonous but there are many
things that I miss, like being able to take a jaunt into Mexico. I even
liked driving there!

I've been to the White Mts -- we spent 3 weeks there about 15 years ago
- the last 3 weeks of October and I've never seen anyplace more
beautiful. We had a bit of snow and the leaves changed. It was
incredible - for a sunny California girl like me it was just an amazing
experience!!!

You know Santee's nickname is Klantee, though? And adjacent Lakeside is the
white supremacist capital of America.

Gives me shivers....(although it was so bleeping HOT today it's hard to
imagine!)

The rather secretive church I grew up in had a yearly "convention" there for
many years.
Do you ever remember lots of people showing up that had long hair (in buns)
and wearing dresses? The women of course...:)
Is Santee very large?

This month I miss the weather there. We're having a sucky winter. Lots of
cold but no snow. Then we got a little snow, just barely enough for sledding,
which lasted two days before it rained all day turning it all to mushy ice.
My 10yo boy is bouncing off the ceiling. It's no fun playing outside in
freezing slush or in weather so cold it hurts to breath and REALLY hurts when
you hit the ground. It's no fun climbing on park equipment when you freeze to
it if your not careful. He wants SNOW!

If we can't have snow, I'd settle for San Diego weather. We had birthday
parties in the park in December. They do homeschool park days year round
there. We need activity!

Yeah... ;-) It got a little ridiculous today, though... I think it was
90 at the stable where I work. We gave every horse a bath! I hope it's
just a bit cooler tomorrow.

I'm fortunate, living in an area where is rains 70% of the year, indoor play
parks abound. In fact, we're off to the indoor pool today. It seems that
those areas which have a shorter "indoor" season don't provide as many of
these places.

I didn't know that. Yucky. The only folks I ever knew in Santee were some
bohemian friends who built a home to sell there. Otherwise they lived aboard
their sail boat and traveled the world.

I just liked the "country" feeling of the area.

I have to admit that right now all this rain is a bummer, my car has a leak
somewhere and I have a perpetual "pond" on the floor in front of my seat.
All the extra moisture has begun a small patch of moss on one of the windows.

Not in New Mexico it doesn't!
"Patch of moss."

We have to go above 8,000 feet in the mountains to find "patch of moss." <g>

And this year I don't know if the moss will even be there. It was 66 degrees
yesterday. It hit 80 in Carlsbad. The mountains which are usually
snow-covered near us are still NOT. The ski run still hasn't opened, and
usually opens Thanksgivingish or Christmas. Scary.

Moss indeed...

Must be nice sometimes!

The moss never dies here!! Even during nearly 3 months of summer heat and
lack of rain is just sits in the cracks of the pavement, brown but not dead.
With the first rains it plumps up and is green within a few days. Kinda
eerie.

We have your snow! This is the first winter in *ages* where the snow has
arrived and stayed all winter. Just like it's supposed to!

No, I haven't been to the White Mts. I actually couldn't remember when the
idea of hiking the AT came about, until my daughter (who lives with my former
husband), said Russ said we came up with it when he was on a military
exercise, and I took the kids and hung out somewhere out in the moutains to
be with him.

I grew up in Northern MN, and had enough cold to do me a life time. I didn't
mind the recent heat wave here in San Diego at all. Actually just got back
from a weekend in Mammoth skiing/snowboarding with two of my sons. I give
them experiences rather than "stuff" as gifts for the holidays. We did a
similiar trip last year, and Trevor turned to me and said "this is the best
present ever!". We had a great time this year too. Well, except for my skis
getting tangled with Devin's snowboard, and my knee is now swollen and
suffering.

I tend to live in my own little world, and ended up out in Santee because
when we were looking for a place to live in San Diego twenty years ago, I
needed to beable to look around and see something besides houses. The hills
here did that for me. I haven't found Lakeside to be threatening. Instead I
love their little library, and the lake and ducks right by it. Russ used to
say I don't live in the "real" world. I maintain I do - just a real world of
my design.

Used to be small - now it has grown, and a shopping center just opened to
compound traffic. The boys used to ride their bikes in all kinds of empty
lots. Now they are all filled with houses. I think that is the fate of my
hiking hills too!!!

I am there now and am very jealous of your San Diego weather right now!

Coincidentally, the PBS special, "Culture of Hate," was rebroadcast on
channel 11 the other night; that's where I got my information. Seeing the
teen boy with "LAKESIDE" tattooed across his chest, along with swastikas and
"SS" symbols, was chilling, as was the interview with the teen girl who
asserted whites were better, but couldn't string enough words together to
explain why.

It is pretty out there, especially along El Monte road where I'm working now
(not at the 67/Willow intersection at Hazy Meadows!).
