I might not have thought much about brooms but for two things: When I was in England, Helene McNeill was trying to find an American-style broom for her house, and kept finding odd other smaller things. And because I was fascinated by a plastic water jug*, I noticed right away plastic brooms (plastic versions of brooms I didn't recognize).
