My favorite book on the subject is _Living Joyfully with Children_ by Win
and Bill Sweet.

It does a pretty good job of explaining the difference.

Just jumping in the middle here, so the book Living Joyfully With
Children by Win Sweet may have already been posted. It talks about
preserving the emotional integrity of the child and the value of
principle based family dynamics.
