Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] nicknames

My mother used to hate it when my brother shortened me to "Di." This was
before Princess Di, of course. My mother heard "Die."
When I named my kids I tried to choose names with acceptable nicknames: Brian
and Katherine.

Kids can be cruel. Sometimes, I call Briana "Bri" for short...and I call my
husband "Shel" (short for Shelton) and I go by "Jo" (obviously short for
JoAnna). We just do it because it's fun. My grandmother told me that her
parents called her "dump" - short for dumpling (she was born weighing 4
pounds). They never called her anything but "dump" unless she was in
trouble...then they called her Janice. I call Briana "piglet" or "my little
breastfed baby". I think names have a place...but sweet nothing names are so
much fun...within the family, of course...She's Briana to everyone but Shel
and I.

Bridget, I think Emmabear is such a cute name! ~Karen

karen,
we called her emmabear because she was so fierce right from the get-go when
she wanted or didn't want something-hated clothes-changing and loved
nursing-usual stuff but she would roar and stiffen up her whole body-so funny
to see her with her tiny fists clenched in rage. the homebirth midwife we had
said she had a temper the second after she was born and she was right. to top
it off, emma refused to wear anything but the gap *bear *booties my mom got
her for her first birthday till we couldn't squeeze them on anymore. now she
insists on wearing her "pitty" (pretty) shoes-white t-strap sandals. she is a
character.

Abigail's 'Abi' anyway, but they're collectively known as the

I'm an Abi!'

it depends, I guess. My nickname (which is my ICQ screen
name) is Troggers, cos a friend at school had had a friend at the
previous school called Tracy Hoggers, so she got called troggers,
and so did I. Considering the stereotypes connected with 'Tracy'
(or Tracey) and awful way it sounds out loud (especially with an
accent) I had NO problem with this!
