Speaking of PBS, is anyone watching the fantastically beneficial "1900
House" mini series? The kids are really enjoying it for the exposure to
living history and social studies. Yes, there definitely are merits to
having PBS access...

Pris, did you have any objections from your dh on the tv ban? I couldn't
pay mine to turn it off! I live amongst tv hounds, and it is frustrating!

Dia Garland

I have not had cable for 12 years.  Furthermore, our TV is in the basement where it gets lousy reception.  Amazing that we have lived to tell about it, huh?

Mmmmm.....there may be more than 2.

We sold our last TV about six years ago, and our oldest is two. He saw Sesame
Street once, at about nine months, and wasn't impressed.

We're the ones who turn off the TV in the waiting room when we get our tires
changed (assuming someone else isn't watching it).

There's more than two of you. We don't have cable either. I refuse to pat
$40+ a month for 60 channels of crap. When we did have it we had problems,
my son and husband both tend to veg out in front of the t.v. I get
frustrated occaisionaly when we can't get certain programs, but the benefits
of not having it are too great. Since we unplugged last year, my husband
has taken up drawing and painting in the evenings instead of staring at the
tube. He's really very good but hadn't done much for years, it's much easier
to just plop down on the couch! I'm sure that cable is fine when used
responsibly, and I'm not anti-t.v.-we watch a lot of PBS.But cable is
definitely not a necessity

Down in the valley where we live not having cable means that we just barely
get one pbs channel -- and that's only if we watch through the vcr and jump
up every few minutes or so to adjust the antenna -- so there are aerobic
benefits as well!

My turn to go read a chapter in FIVE CHILDREN AND IT by Nesbit -(hmm I
wonder if all her titles rhyme with her name). Very good book about
siblings who discover a wish granting sand fairy in a gravel pit.

Goodnight

I've got to jump in on the cable. We didn't need cable where we used to
live, PBS came in fine. Now that we've moved to an area that you have NO
reception without cable, we have fallen victim to giving the cable company
$11.00/month to receive a very minimal amount of channels. I will say,
however, that we are an extremely active family, gardening, sewing, reading
and reading and reading, we pick special things on PBS or discovery to check
out and that's about it. My 9yo son just watched a show on Discovery last
night about a giant squid and he was fascinated by it, it was great! Yes, he
could go check out a book on this, but the point I want to make is this:

He didn't have any interest to check out a book on a giant squid until AFTER
he SAW the show on it. So, I feel that the tv can be used responsibly. :-)

If there were a way you could pay for only the channels you want and skip
the garbage, I would love to have Discovery,Learning channel and especially
the History Ch. etc. but I suppose the cable co. wouldn't make much money
that way!

Our cable company (in the UK) has otpions where you sign up for
groups of programs, and this can be changed every month. So if,
like my dh, you're a big fan of certain sports, you could sign up for
the sports channels when there's a particular tournament on. Or
you could get the film channels for the holiday period. But we get
the whole shebang <g>

I think that is wonderful that you have all made the decision to get rid of
television, however, I don't find it be the "evil" that some think it is.

Last night, we watched the 1900 house on PBS and it was really interesting.
We've watched the ballet and various concerts and broadway performances as
well. We often watch the Discovery Channel together as a family. It is not
central in our lives, but another tool that we use. I will admit that my
dch usually have Nick Jr. on most mornings, but it is usually just
background noise (until Little Bear is on and then my dd will sit and
watch).

Congratulations to you all.

Bonnie

about what we watch, but we like the choices.I know people who choose not
to have a tv,and thats great. However our life is fine with one...Deb in

Trisha, did your dh ever object to less tv watching? If so, how did you both
come to agree to turn it off more often? I'm not totally against tv either,
but I do not want it on 24/7, and unless I make a fuss, and make everyone
turn them off at least for specified times of the day, then the set(s) stay
on, and this bugs me. Thanks for any thoughts. ~Karen in IN

Brynn, I completely agree with this. I don't plan on not ever watching
it, and I don't plan on making my kids not ever watch either. We just need a
set of tv viewing rules that apply to the entire house, so that it is
consistent from day to day. Right now, whenever my dh is off from work, it
throws the daily routine off that I have with the kids. My dh is a police
officer and works a 4 on, 2 off schedule, so his days off are different each
week. When he is home, he always has the set on, and it doesn't matter what
is on, he just flips through the stations and will leave something on. I
limit myself on the amt of time spent on the computer, b/c to me, it's the
same difference as having the tv on all of the time. Well, I will continue
on trying to keep the sets off as much as possible. :) ~Karen

Hi Bonnie, my kids used to play with the tv running in the background, too.
Then over this last year, they became more in tune with the tv, and less
with the playing, which is why it became so bothersome to me. Now, when I
tell them it has to go off, they often react with temper outburts and crying.
They are 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 yrs old. They are hooked, and it makes them very
upset not to have it on. Hope this doesn't happen to your little ones, as
it is very stressful "getting them off the tube" now. ~Karen

Remove the TV completely to some other room like a bedroom.

Well, I'm not sure I think it's "evil" and we may get a TV when the kids are
older, but I do think it's not good for young children.

I do know, though, that *I* find it mesmerizing, and if it's on, I'm hooked.
So I'd be happy never to have one again.
