Those squares automatically show up in posts from time to time. They're not
put there by the sender to the best of my knowledge

Those "squares" often indicate that you are using a non-standard font or
symbol. It is likely that the e-mail message is being composed with a word
processor that's uses special codes for soft returns or soft spaces or
things like bold or italics. When translated to ASCII for e-mail, those
unprintable codes may become empty boxes.

I use Pegasus for my email, having recently converted from OE5.
So that's not the problem, and I only ever use Courier, TNR or
Arial fonts. Hmmmm.....
