How do you run an anti-virus? How do you know if you have a virus?

Gayle Bechtel

It may be but I know it sends itself out as part of your signature line in Outlook Express.  I am on about 5 e-groups and I have gotten this from 3 different ones now.

does this show up with x's? I don't have it but have seen many with it..how
do you get it? thanks Kim

Gayle Bechtel

You can get it by just opening an e-mail that is infected with it.  If you opened Linda's e-mail then you would have gotten it.  Do you have Outlook Express?  If you do you can check where you change the signature line and see if it has attached itself there.

If you have the new updated OE5 or do not use html text it should not bother
you. I understand that Kak runs in the rich text. I had it a few months ago,
but I upgraded and now I just get a notice that says that a post has an
active x and the program runs in a sort of safety program, not allowing Kak
in. HTH

How will you know if it has attached itself there?

I run OE5 and I still get it.  I have only had the Active X come up once.  If I run my Norton Anti-Virus at maximum then it catches it every time.  If I run Norton AV at medium it never catches it.  This is a weird virus it goes directly in to the windows start up menu and then it also attaches itself as a file to your signature line of e-mail.
My hubby thinks that the people who make up these virus' need to be shot.

If you have outlook express - you click on Tools then go down and click on Options when that comes up you click on the tab that says Signatures.  At the bottom of the page it will say File and if the kak virus is there it will have it as the default.

Gayle,
Thanks for your help. I use CompuServe, so I am not sure what to do.
Any ideas? I will keep looking.

I opened the email that contained the virus, but neither Norton nor McAfee
virus scans detected it on my system. Does that sound possible? I don't use
Outlook Express.

Check to see that your norton settings for when it scans for virus's is set on maximum.  I had to do that because mine didn't find it until I set it up on maximum.  It's defaulted to medium setting.

I use Norton System Works.  It has the anti-virus and other things to keep the computer running smoothly.  I love Norton.  we had McAfee but didn't like it as well, came with our new computer so we took it off.

While this discussion is going on, I'm interested in what everyone uses
for a virus protection software.  I had McAfree, but it slowed down my
computer so much I too it out.  Any suggestions...

i also use netscape not express and my virus scans come up with nothing.   i've never had a virus,  could i have this and just be missing it?  when you say ' it sent itself out as part of your signiture line in outlook express'  you're not refering to me specifically are you ,but rather you meant 'it sends itself out as part of the  signiture line in outlook express'?  sorry i don't mean to me so thick about this it's just that i would hate to pass a virus on unknowingly.

thanks a lot,

You are right - if you don't have outlook express then I guess from what people have said - you don't need to worry about it.  I wasn't meaning you in particular  -  it was a general statement.
