Hi All,
Trevor (6 in September) has developed an interest in werewolves, King Kong,
monsters, etc.... It's hard to find any resources on this topic for his age
group. We've watched King Kong, American Werewolf in London, Jurassic Park,
etc...Any ideas?

GODZILLA!

My boys all loved Godzilla movies. They are cheap and easy to find. There
is a whole genre called 'Kaiju" that includes all Japenese monster stuff.

Being just fresh from a session of reading The Old Schoolhouse magazine and
looking through their website, that question was really jarring for me!!!

Oh yeah! I'm back in unschooler-territory!

The first things that flashed through my head was what the fundamentalist
Christians who write for The Old Schoolhouse would have said about a child's
[sinful] desire to know about werewolves and dinosaurs.

But speaking of scary things, there is an interview with Patrick Farenga in
this new issue of The Old Schoolhouse.

Remember the discussion here a month or two back, after Day spoke in Florida
and someone expressed dismay that she didn't seem too dedicated to unschooling?

According to this article, all their kids have been in school and out, and as
of that writing, only the 16 year old (eldest) was home. He said the
youngest will probably stay home too next year. He said the main reason was that he
and his wife had to work full time after GWS closed.

I'm glad to be here with "practicing unschoolers."

The quote used for decoration and allure in another article in that issue is
this, and makes me afraid to even begin to read the whole article:

The article's name is "Running From the Chisel" and the quote is:
"God help me, I do not like to stretch. I want to be comfortable. But
truthfully, even more, I don't want to be a whiney brat. . . God help me to be a
young David rather than a spoiled bratty mother raising spoiled bratty royalty."

I like being around people who believe in being kind to their children.

THANKS to this list!!

LOL I didn't think about that. Of course, my favorite author is Anne Rice so
maybe the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

Godzilla! The old ones. Lots of building stomping, train crunching,
jet swatting, etc. Great for little kids!
Some Godzilla titles:

Godzilla King of the Monsters
Godzilla Raids Again (subtitled)
King Kong vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Ghidora the Three Headed Monster
Godzilla vs. Monster Zero
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Godzilla's Revenge
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Destroy All Monsters!
Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla
Terror of Mecha Godzilla
Godzilla 1985
Godzilla vs. Biolante
Godzilla vs. King Ghidora
Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla 2
Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah ( Godzilla has a yucky death at the end of this
one, might be upsetting to small people who really love Godzilla. It's
kinda melty and gross, says Dylan)
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla 2000

Some other good monster movies:

Gorgo
Reptillicus
Twenty Million Miles to Earth
The Beast From Twenty Thousand Fathoms
Reptillian (newer)
Creature from the Black Lagoon
It Came From Beneath the Sea

If you like cheesey B movies: (and who doesn't?<g>)

Monster From the Ocean Floor
Attack of the Crab Monsters

(We have more titles if you need to know them, but these are two of our
favorites)

A good old Silent movie is Nosferatu. It's a vampire movie directed by
F.W. Murnau and it's available at Amazon.

There are lots more according to Dylan but that should get you started.

Oh! Oh! Oh!

I forgot:

Jason and the Argonauts
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
Clash of the Titans

Mythology and monsters and romance if you think your little guy would
like that.

Wow.

Holly's friend's birthday came and her mom said the kid was interested in old
B&W movies with bad special effects, like King Kong.

I tried to buy her The Blob, but was told it's OUT OF PRINT!!!! yikes. How
could a movie that terrible be unavailable?? <bwg>

So I bought her King Kong.

I love The Blob. That really scared me when I saw it as a little kid,
but my all time favorite scared-me-as-a-kid movie is The Horror of Party
Beach. Terrible monsters, terrible acting, terrible sound, terrible
everything and I love it. Our copy died from over use and I've been
waiting for it to be on TV somewhere so I can tape it.

The Green Slime, and Kronos are good too. Good monsters in The Green
Slime. They make great noises.

There is a good Time-Life book called Mysterious Creatures that has some
great pictures. Although it will be "old" for him, my son started reading it at
age 6 and still finds it fascinating for more reasons now at 13.

Our library has dozens of monster books for kids. My oldest has a
fascination for monsters, aliens, and anything else that is strange.
He gets it from me :-)

We love to watch the Movie Science Theater. I think
that's what it's called. You know the guy in space
who has to watch all the movies with his robots. They
quite often have monsters. Although, there might be
some more adult comments for the younger ones. We do
let our kids watch them.

I did find a book on Amazon <A HREF="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1580626572/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_3/102-9224523-7056121">The Everything Kids' Monsters Book: From Ghosts,
Goblins, and Gremlins to Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies: Puzzles, Games,
and Trivia Guaranteed to Keep You Up at Night (Everything Kids Series)</A> by
Shannon R. Turlington, et al It said something about age 9 and up but I think it
would be fine. Usborne also has a book on Vampires that came up when I did a
search for werewolves that I might get too.

If you are willing to let him watch those, than I recommend Buffy the
Vampire Slayer, the TV show. Seasons 1-4 are on DVD. Great monsters,
wonderful role models, kick butt action, and some of the BEST writing on TV
that I have ever seen.

My seven year old loves it.

Oh, and we just watched The Lost Boys today. He really enjoyed it. I was
so tickled, 'cause I just love it to death.

Ugh, no.

But I had really and truly forgotten how amazingly HOT Keifer Sutherland was
in that. I also tend to forget that he's not much older than me. Oh, and
still HOT!!!!

We just borrowed a book from the library yesterday. It's called Draw Fantasy
Dragons, Centaurs & Other Mythological Creatures. There's a werewolf
included in it. It's by Shari Cohen, illustrated by Frank Dixon. My boys are
loving it. Jacob drew a unicorn last night that was amazing.
