I HATE buying shoes. I have weird feet...very small and very wide...almost
square! I can rarely find shoes that fit in stores. I considered it a major
accomplishment when I was recently able to find a pair of what we call "Big Girl
Shoes" (pumps) that fit me.

Ah, but Birkenstocks! Being in the north, they're not great when there's
snow on the ground. But even in the winter, with heavy socks, they are comfy and
cozy. I usually buy a pair every couple of years, and wear them as much of the
year as I can. Even after the couple of years, they're wearable, just a bit
worn. You can get stuff to protect the cork, or they can be re-soled, but I'm
lazy and disorganized, so I never do that. I figure, $90, every two years,
nearly year-round wear...It's actually pretty cost-effective.

Ah, you have to grow to appeciate the earthy beauty of the Birkenstock.

Actually, they make some that are more traditionally attractive, but they're
generally not a really sexy shoe. Alas, some of us are shoe-impaired, and
destined not to wear sexy shoes with pain or serious injury.

So we grow to appreciate the Earth Beauty of the Birkenstock.

Kathryn (who is pretty sure she will not being wearing undie thongs, either)

You ever have those moments when you realize your mother was right about
stuff?

For me, it was elastic waist pants. I remember clothes shopping with my
mother as a teenager. She held up a pair of pants with an elastic waist, saying,
"These look comfortable!" I suspect I made a cross with my fingers or
something, as well as giving her a disdainful, horrified look.

A number of years later I discovered, yes, they ARE comfortable, and that's
MUCH more important.

My mom asked if she could (and was given permmission to) wear Birkenstocks to
my wedding.

Hi, Kathryn --

I think you are my long-lost foot twin! <g>

I wear a single pair of Clarks sandals about everyday and year round,
except when the rain is heavy enough to make significant puddles. (No
snow in the SF Bay Area.)

Wearing mostly Birkenstocks, or athletic shoes for certain activities. I
also have a pair of great "dress" shoes that my mom paid well over $100 for,
then decided she didn't like them. I love them. It says NAOT on the shoe.

You can get birks even cheaper than that. Some are $50-60. Depends what
style you want. Mine last for years. Although I have so many that I wear each
pair less. And I take care of the cork. I do wear mine year round.

Birks are great! Well worth the money, IMHO. Try this site for great deals
on Birks, just be sure to try some on somewhere to make sure you order the
right size; they aren't exchangeable. http://www.birkenstock-cn.com/

Wow, I'm almost afraid to admit it but for $90.00 I can get a nice pair of
sneakers, sandals, flip flops and still have quite a bit of money left over.
I go every 2 years with sneakers and more like 3-4 with sandals and flip
flops. I'm a very frugla shopper when it comes to clothes. Unfortunately my
oldest is not at all!!!

How is the cork protected from the water?

I figure I'm paying for comfort, and it's worth it. Our downstairs is just
linoleum over concrete and murder on my back without my Birks.

The Birkis aren't leather and cork. They are some type of plasticy stuff
(Is that a word?) Think garden clogs. As a matter of fact I garden in
mine, then just hose them off. Also, well cared for Birkenstocks (the
regular cork and leather ones) can last a long time. My original ones are
going on 8 years old, and have only been re-soled once. I also had a kid's
pair that made it through three kids wearing them each two years all year
long! Who knows, they might still be going strong, I just ran out of kids.

I agree, however, there is a strain that some fruglas possess; it makes them very violent and viscous. While I don't actually know much about these fruglas, I do know that they can roll much faster than the domestic, garden type variety; that, coupled with their small size can make them surprisingly suprising. There have been reports ( I think from SW Texas???) that have the fruglas traving at rolling speeds of over 65 miles an hour.

Just wanted to let you know....

Well, The Barefoot Sandal Co is going out of business here---everything's 70%
off! But both pairs were gifts from Ben---and he's not the bargain shopper I
am! <g>

I have three pair of the waterproof ones. Ones with suns and moons on them,
one with a flower print in gray and blue and one pair with blues in what I
call a wave pattern. Love them. Also have about 12 other pairs as well. Gotta
love 'em. A pair for every occasions.

So are they as comfortable without the cork? What are they called?

I wish mine lasted that long. Maybe it's the weather here on the wet coast.
I try to keep the corks protected, but . . .
