My job as a kid was to mow the backyard every week. We had a push mower with
a grass catcher, that my dad kept "well tuned"....it sounds like yours needs
the blades sharpened...they should not be that hard to use. I think the
trick is to WALK FAST...LOL!! That gets the blade spinning quickly and it
cuts much better. I saw one at a thrift store a while back and it brought
back such memories!! If our yard wasn't so big I would have bought it.

I hate yard tools that have motors...don't even ask me about our
weedeater...takes about 57 pulls to get it going....sheesh....finally went
out and got one of those old metal "weed whackers"....much easier.

Forget cords!
Sears has a terrific cordless electric mower. We've had it for two or
three years and love it. No gas to schlep, to cord to roll back up, just
plug it in and forget about it.

No, no, no! No grass catcher. The clippings feed the lawn naturally.
Recycling at its best. :o)

I don't use one of those either. I either leave the edges au natural
or clip by hand with the shears. We designed our yard to look good
natural. Less time and energy, lots of beauty.

**That's why I got rid of our gas powered lawn mower and settled for an
electric lawn mower which is only about as loud as a big blow dryer and
starts right up with a squeeze of the handle. **

In California, in the last month, the government was partially
subsidizing the cost of electric mowers for people who turn in their gas
mowers. Apparently, the exhaust from the mowers is consider to
contribute significantly to air pollution. Anyway, if you need a mower,
check it out.

Are the cords long enough for big yards?

I use two extension cords. (One of which has been completely mowed over
and spliced back together.) My yard isn't even big, just long and
skinny. You may want to pace off your distance.

Well.... They were ahead in getting all polluted, so they need to be ahead in
figuring out how to undo it. Y'think they'll be selling those turned-in
mowers to some other state or country? <g>

They drain them of all liquids and they send them off to a metal
recycling facility.

We were going to do it - but forgot to go. They have special dates and
places to do it and only a certain number of electric mowers available
- 1,000 at each location each day. You get a $450 electric lawnmower
for $150 if you turn in an old gas mower.

The one we have, you have to buy your own extension cord to plug in the mower.

We also use the natural look to our advantage, but the lawnmower(s) we use
whinny a lot, leave the odd big hole, and auto-fertilize the lawn! We do have
to watch if we play soccer or anything, and there has been the oddstampede if
the electric fence comes down!

Ryobi makes a very nice cordless weed whacker. I've yet to run it down
entirely. (although, we have a fairly small yard.) The charger can even
mount on the wall so it's always ready and waiting.

We do have a fairly small yard (lots of garden!), but I can mow the front
and back yards three times before it runs down. It recharges in a matter
of hours, so even if you have to recharge (That'd be a really big yard!) it
wouldn't be a big deal. Do the front before midday heat, the back after...

We had a cordless electric lawn mower in Iowa. We had a big yard and we
were able to mow half before the charge went out. That was about all
the energy either of us had to mow anyway. The rest was left for the
next day. Here, in Arizona, with a small yard, we have a manual mower.
It is so easy to use and push, that is the way we would go if we ever
had a big yard again. We also had a cordless trimmer, too, so I know
they exist. We never needed it for our yard there. Now, we have a
manual one for the edges and a corded electric one for the sides of
things. that works great.

A quick search said about a hundred bucks retail or $16.50 on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2321059373&category=20539

Toro has one for about 70 bucks, retail. I got mine several years ago, so
I don't know what they're really going for nowadays. I'd check out ebay if
I really wanted one fairly cheaply.

You can get sheep shears for about $4 there. They've got some awfully
fascinating stuff. Dd said she saw one auction where someone was auctioning
off tattoo space on their ankle. Company logos, someone's name,
whatever. Win the auction and he'd tattoo whatever you like on his ankle.
