Ugh, it's late! I should paste now! This is to benefit a 10 year old girl who has brain cancer. Just for this morning, I am

This is a hoax. Before sending these on, check one of the hoax sites. Here
are two. http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBHoaxCategories.html

The poem is cool. The "benefit" is bogus (as to money for e-mail chain
letters) but this verse I wanted especially to repeat, and contrast with
something I read to Holly last night while she was falling asleep:

Just for this evening, I will let
> you stay up late while we sit on the
> porch and count all the stars.

I'll just quote it and if anyone recognizes it before the end, you get the
satisfaction of confirmation of your literary knowledge!

The lights from the parlour and kitchen shone out
Through the blinds and the windows and bars;
And high overhead and all moving about,
There were thousands of millions of stars.
There ne'er were such thousands of leaves on a tree,
Nor of people in church or the park,
As the crowds of the stars that looked down upon me,
And that glittered and winked in the dark.

The Dog, and the Plough, and the Hunter, and all,
And the star of the sailor, and Mars,
These shone in the sky, and the pail by the wall
Would be half full of water and stars.
They saw me at last, and they chased me with cries,
And they soon had me packed into bed;
But the glory kept shining and bright in my eyes,
And the stars going round in my head.

It's "Escape at Bedtime" by Robert Louis Stevenson, part of _A Child's Garden
of Verses_.

I love the bucket being half full of water and stars.

If only his parents had sat with him outside and talked about the sky instead
of chasing him and putting him to bed maybe his poetry and stories would
have been less scary and lonely.

I think the poem is sad. Just for tonight, implies that the things
being done in this poem, aren't done very often. I think it's sad that
a child has to have a disease before parents can remember to spend some
quality time with them.

thank you Sandra, that was really beautiful. I will have to read that to mine tonight! Sorry about the bogus benefit, I am truly naive when it comes to things like that. I cant believe that someone would lie about something so serious and heart breaking as a sick child! Kelli

If any parent who gets that poem is kinder and gentler with her child even
for one day, it serves a much greater purpose than most e-mail stuff, though!
And when people read it who are already giving their kids as full a life as
they can, it reinforces them.

It is sad that so many parents shut their kids out of life. Just by living
our lives the way we do, unschoolers, we make it harder for parents to keep
doing that for hundreds of years to come. Some will. Not as many will.
What else can we do?

This is what it meant to me last night when I read it. I was on the computer in our bedroom and my 10 year old had just fallen asleep in our bed reading Artemis Fowl (a new book we are reading together) I could hear sleep take over her in her breathe and I just felt this overwhelming urge to hold her, keep her with me, protect her and love her. The poem was a reminder for me of such a great gift that I have and how fortunate I am that she is healthy and the other two are healthy too. Peace, Kelli

It may have been a hoax,
but it made me think.
