Deschooling & The Grazer's Curriculum
athom
When folks are deschooling and going through the roller coaster ride
that sometimes accompanies letting go of curriculum imperatives I
often recommend a "Grazer's Curriculum." I put together a bunch of
sites, including e-newsletters and e-zines, other smorgasbord
learning sites, many of which arrive in the e-mailbox daily, weekly
or monthly. The student enjoys full grazing rights, to poke around
in all the interesting stuff he/she receives, or to find his or her
own stuff.
Truthfully, these little educational mini-meals offer a wide variety
of educational fare, enough to form a firm curricular foundation for
almost anyone. Throw in the student's choice of library books, some
good videos, some audio books, and a whole lot of hands-on experience
and, voila! In no time at all the deschooler will have slipped
easily into unschooling, with barely a whimper of withdrawal.
Here is part of my list for the totally FREE "Grazer's Curriculum."
I'm sure that others have some favorites of their own, but the idea
is to put out the buffet and leave the rest up to the student to
decide what, if anything, interests him or her. Usually, eventually,
they abandon this altogether and wander merrily down their own
learning path. This gives them something to snack on until they get
there:
