I fell down the stairs on Sunday and managed a spectacular fracture (5
places) requiring surgery and much useless morphine which only made me sick.
they switched my meds and I feel much better, am having to hire a nanny to
look after my kids and am overjoyed that i have 1000 emails to keep me busy.
DH is lending me the laptop to keep me entertained. Who knew aol had a 1000
message limit? I'm going to plow through some to clear some space and try
not to respond to those that are too old.

This is going to be a difficult 8 weeks to get through. 8 weeks of no weight
bearing (any hints on using crutches would be appreciated). After that, who
knows?

Elizabeth! Well, first here's a big hug and I'm handing you a nice cuppa tea.
How are the kids doing? Was it difficult finding a nanny on such short notice?
My kids often joke that I can't break my leg because then they'd have to eat
what their dad cooks. Can we send you some cookies or how about a book or two,
I sell OOP children's and young adult books so I have extras sitting about.
Have an old favorite you'd like to read again now that you've got some time?
Email me and I'll find you something. I love revisiting old favorites but
rarely have the time to read them.

Yeah. I found out today.

Get a walker at first, maybe, if your leg isn't all straight out and too long.
I got a walker without wheels, because I was so afraid of falling again
before this heals.

I'm really, really sorry to hear you're hurt.
Yikes. Yours sounds way WAY worse than mine.

Oh,,,Elizabeth,,
I hope you are feeling OK, boy it must be the season, I have a good friend here too that just severely sprained her foot and ewww. And a brother-in-law too! Theirs will heal in a week or so but 8 weeks, yuck!

Well, I guess you'll have plenty of time to read and respond to all sorts of e-mail, <g>.

Oh, Elizabeth!!

{{{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}, and many good wishes for fast healing. I'm so sorry
to hear of your fall.

Best bet on crutches: don't use them. They hurt your arms and underneath
your arms. I hate them! But it did help me to remember to lotion the place
they rub a lot; that way I didn't hurt so much.

Peace,
brenda

p.s. This isn't contagious, is it? 'Cause I've got a lot to do in the next
2 months and don't wanna break my leg, too!

Peggy -

Thanks for your kind words. I actually have so much to read, it might take
me eight weeks!

I think I may have mentioned this earlier in an email, but as soon as my
friends found out how extensive the damage was, they took it upon themselves
to search out and screen candidates for me. They started on Monday and had
me two folks to interview by Thursday. We made the decision then. I guess
with the economy, many nannies have been displaced. She's high energy and
has worked with invalid adults, so she'll be multi-tasking. It's very
difficult for me to have someone else watch my children, but I'm just in the
living room and will see them throughout the day. we've learned to do a
double snuggle in the hospital bed we've set up and have read "Shoo Fly don't
bother me" so many times I have almost all the verses memorized.

So, it's not so bad. I can even wiggle my toes today!

Well if you run out of ideas I am re-reading Laurie R. King's _O Jerusalem_
and I am enjoying even more the second time around.

Great to hear you have such wonderful support! What a great community.

Will be thinking of you wiggling your toes!

What is the difference between wriggle and wiggle anyway?

I think maybe wriggling is intranstive. Worms do it.

Wiggling is transitive. You do it to something else.

Or else they're just different spellings, like plough and plow and colour and
color.

Thanks for this, Brenda, I'll try the lotion. They were hurting under my
arms, but then when I was bathing this morning, I noticed my whole right side
under my arms is bruised - old bruises. I have no memory of the actual fall,
funny how that works. But I must have bounced down a couple of stairs.
Vivid memories of the aftermath - trying to find my legs, trying to put my
foot back, dragging myself up the stairs and begging my four year old to get
the phone, pleading with the 911 operator, having the mantra chant in my head
(and outloud) "I cant leave my kids, I can't leave my kids, I can't leave my
kids..." But nothing of the fall. So, the bruises are probably part of that
pain under my arms. A wheelchair arrived today from the HMO, that will make
things easier. I have somewhere comfortable to sit now with my foot up!

Thanks for the advice!

Don't know if this will help you, but my mom's physiotherapist told her that crutches work best when adjusted so that you DON'T rest your under-arm on them at all, but instead carry your weight by using only your hands on the hand-grips, and your arms to keep the crutches against your side. Took her a little longer to master this, but it worked really well for her.

If you want to give a homeopathic remedy a try, arnica works great
for bruises. You can get it as little tiny sugar pellets that you let
dissolve under your tongue and as cream that you rub where you're
bruised.

Hi,
Don't put the crutches right at your armpits. Instead, place them a little
lower (about the top of your breasts). Angle them when walking or standing
so that your full body weight is evenly distributed (or else your wrists and
lower arms will get sore.) I learned this from a college roommate with
cerebral palsy who used crutches. You might also be able to apply for a
handicapped tag for your cars and be able to use the closer parking spots
(doesn't matter if you're not the driver, just as long as you're in the car.

I can't rub where I'm bruised, but I have arnica tablets someone brought
over. I'm taking those and also the pineapple things which should try to
replace eating half a fresh-not-canned pineapple every day.

We forgot to ask about that when we went to the doctor last week.

Thanks for the advice, I've been trying that technique. I think the problem
may be in the amount of weight I'm having to lift up and support on my one
leg. Good think I worked out a lot before the accident.
