My two kids are getting interested in pirates.
Does anyone have a website or search engine that lists books about a
certain subject?

Any suggestions on good stories/movies re: pirates.

I can think of Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Swiss Family Robinson,
Peter Pan.

Thanks

Pirates of Penzance has the great song "I am the Pirate King" which all
pirate fans should choreograph and sing in their own homes.

If you get to get to Disneyland, the Pirates of the Caribbean souvenir-shop
stuff is a good pirate supply shop. The little guns (which they sell in
other historic-recreation museum places sometimes too) take individual caps.
You can get roll caps and cut them and fire one at a time. My boys LOVED
that.

Costume shops (any party shop) will probably have some pirate stuff.

I write a column reviewing internet sites. This is my working file with
urls and some of my comments for a column I'm working on about
pirates. Help yourself. <g>

http://www.piratesinfo.com/main.shtml
Pirates History
This is a good site, with lots of information, but you have to get past the
numerous typos, grammatical errors, and confusing navigation. You start by
choosing either Fact or Legend. If you choose Fact, you'll be taken
through a general history of piracy from ancient times through the Roman
years, the middle ages, the golden years of piracy from the 1600s through
the 1800s and into the modern era. I hadn't realized that Sir Francis
Drake was actually a pirate, and I had no idea of the amount of piracy
still going on today.

The Types of Piracy section will clue you in to the differences between
pirates, buccaneers, privateers, and corsairs. In the Famous Pirates
section you'll learn about a number of famous pirates including Edward
Teach, Henry Morgan, Mary Read, Sir Francis Drake, and Stede Bonnet. The
section on Pirate Facts will help you learn about boarding techniques, the
Jolly Roger, pirate life on land and sea, rules, and punishment. There's
information about the various types of pirate ships as well as the parts of
the ships, with pictures.

The legend section of the site offers a list of fiction about pirates, in
books, movies and poems. There's a discussion of Treasure Island as a
source of the legends about hooks, peg legs, and parrots.

Get some details about Mary Read or one of the others.

There's an account of the finding of what many experts think is

favourite foods and "management philosophy". (There's no evidence that he
ever actually killed anyone. He used fear and intimidation to get what he
wanted.) There's a glossary of pirate terms, a discussion of pirate
flags, and some myths about pirates debunked.

Okay, I went to Google and put in...pirates books costumes...and came up
with 10 pages of results! Here are a few that look like good resource pages:

http://www.surfnetkids.com/pirates.htm
http://www.maineharbors.com/febweb01.htm
http://www.fun-books.com/usborne.htm

We've had lots of fun with pirate costumes here. You can get a Captain Hook
"hook", eye patches, fake treasure, bandanas, and cool pirate type guns in
costume/toy/party shops. They're not expensive either. Trasure maps are fun
to make and you can even age them with tea bags and some burning of the
edges.

Q: Why couldn't the kid get into the pirate movie?
A: Because it was rated "Aaarrrrr!"

Life is good.
~Mary

Sandra,
Actually we go to Disney World every 2 years and this coming winter
is our time to go. Yippee!

The Pirates of C. ride is great. Maybe the gift shop there will have
some CD's or something.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Now I have to go get my tickets out and put my past videos in of our
trips. Shoot--- you have me antsy to get going now.

Mary,
You old sea dog! I didn't expect you to do the work. Now I'll have
to walk the plank for feeling guilty.

Thanks for the info.

By the way dd and ds went, "huh?" to your joke. Ha!

Now I have to explain ratings on movies.

CD's of what?

Having had young pirates meself for a few years, I can tell ye this: You
need hats, guns and swords!!

Pirate chests...
that would be from a thrift store (Mexican jewelry boxes from the 60's and
70's) or import shop. Or an old ammo box. We buried ours in the sandbox
once, with sacks of pennies, and ziploc bags of candy, and we made a map.
Aaargh...

Marty's Pirate Party was a big social event here once upon a time.

Cd's of songs--old pirate ditties.

Yeah, if that would only work. Mindy is a beagle. We have hidden
her in the house and sure enough her nose follows our scent.
Then watch the sand/dirt fly.

We even sunk some stuff to the bottom of our pool. She just climbs
the ladder and jumps in.

Oh well, at least she makes us laugh.
