Low platelet count

Any idea what a low platelet count might mean? My husband's went from
140,000 to 121,000 to 99, 000 (in about 3 years). I guess they don't get
concerned until it's about 20,000. He's going to see a hematologist, but I'd
like to stop worrying now!
