Hi Everyone,
We are headed off to the porch to snuggle up and read more of Pippi
Longstocking. (is she a true unschooler or what? LOL) The kids are
loving it!!
We also just recently read Owls in The Family following someone's on
this lists recommendation. They loved it too.
So, what books has everyone been reading, reading out loud ect.... My
kids are aged 4-8, but age doesn't matter. I always like to hear what
everyone is reading and enjoying.
Oh yeah, we also just read The Lion Witch and Wardrobe. I was a little
uncertain as the younger ones are very sensitive, and scare very easily,
but they enjoyed it too.
Thanks for sharing....

We have been reading Little Men by Louisa M. Alcott. One of my son's
first commnets was " They homeschool, don't they ? " This book has led
to discussions about life in the late 1800's and early 1900's. After
we read it, I will read Little Women, Eight Cousins and Jo's Boys also
written by her.

You've been busy bees! Sounds like fun!

I agree that the age difference doesn't matter. They
get different things from the material, but they all
benefit from the practice of being read to. I
remember reading 'Wind and the Willow' to my son when
he was five, and I *knew* he didn't understand most of
what he was hearing, but he wanted me to read it. I
asked him why, and he said 'The words sound so pretty
when you are reading them, I just like to listen to
them'. Well! So he soaked up the rhythm and flow and
musicality of good writing... certainly nothing to be
sneezed at there!

Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job of enriching
your children's lives...

Wonderful suggestions, thanks for sharing. I don't think I would have
thought of these.

How I miss those times. Snuggled in bed reading to my dd (and my dd -
ds - ds and ds before that!) but my dd likes to read herself now.
She is *far to big* for dm to read to her!!!!!

Laurie's absolute favorites were the Little House books. I read them
aloud to her when she was seven years old (3-4 hours a day).
I 'became' Ma...and she was Laura .... for years!

We have bee reading "Sign of the Beaver". Both of my boys, ages 11, and 9
1/2 have read it, but have begged me to read it to them again. Also, my
daughter and I have been reading the Little House on the Prairie books, per
her request. We have read the whole series a hundred times, but she really
"connects" with Laura.
Update on my 11 year old, wanting to come home from ps.... HE IS HOME!!!
and enjoying every minute of it! It's only been 2 weeks, but I already can
see some changes in attitude, although we still have a lot of de-programming
to do. My 9 year old boy, and 8 year old girl, are both still in school,
although they are wanting to "be sick".. and stay home more often. <grin>
Thank you all for the advice and support you have provided! You are a
wonderfully diverse group of people.

I read "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" as a child. I reread it several
times. It is by the same author as "Sign of the Beaver" , Elizabeth George
Speare. It is based in the colonies in the late 1600's. I saved mine and am
starting to read it to & with my boys ages 3,7 & 9.
I also plan to read them the "All creatures" books by James Herroit this
summer. They are above their reading level but are so well written and so
enthralling.

That's a wonderful book, isn't it? We liked it, too.

Do keep us updated on that, please! We are waiting
until the end of the school year to pull my 11yo out
of the system, though he is certainly experiencing a
sort of 'senioritis', looking forward to
homeschooling. I can see that there will need to be a
lot of deprogramming... he is very distressed if I ask
him a question that doesn't have a clear Right Answer,
among other things. I'd love to get an idea of how
long I can expect that deschooling process to take...

EGSpeare also wrote a book called "Calico Captive". I
read these books as a child, too. Has she written any
others?

There's one called "Bronze Bow" set in Galilee in Jesus' time. I don't know
of any others.
