unschooling resources
Sherry Hagen
Hi Folks,
I have two families who have just pulled their Kindergarten and First
grade boys out of school. They are familiar with more "traditional"
homschooling but are interested in unschooling. What books would you
recommend? I've learned most of my unschooling ideals from my friend
Dorothy who is an expert and has even spoken with John Holt. She also
talks about unschooling at various conferences. The only book I've read
is John Holt's "Escape From Childhood".
Thanks much,
Sherry
PS Thanks for all the input about Math help, I've passed it on to my
friend.

My favorite is Nancy Wallace's "Child's Work". I also think the most important
homeschooling/unschooling book of the last decade is not about homeschooling at
all! It is "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" by Mihaly
Cszikshentimihalyi.

Tell your friends to give their children de-compression time. Time to
play, watch tv (pbs, disney, good videos), go for nature walks, play in
the park, etc. They need this first for at least a couple weeks or so
before the parents can think of helping them do anything else. IF a child
asks a question about something and the parent doesn't know the answer,
have the parent and child do the research together. Have the parent read
stories that the children are interested in out loud together...bible
reading, poetry, etc. Tell them not to worry about math, spelling,
etc....it will evolve naturally over time. This is the best beginning I
can think of. ITs what I am doing with my daughter right now. I pulled
her out of ps 4 weeks ago.
