We do Christmas our own way as we are not of the organized religions
persausion. Each year we take turns reading Christmas stories from
different religions and countries. We're a curious bunch here and like to
know the hows and whys of what other folks do.
Each year we pick a different country to "do" for dinner. This year we are
doing Germany and the whole menu is from Germany.
We have lots of music and sing alongs.
Christmas isn't part of my heritage but is part of hubby's so we go with the
flow, so to speak. And all of us being artsy types, our house (a Victorian
cottage) ends up looking like an advertisement for a Chevy Chase movie or a
Home Improvements episode <g>

We celebrate Christmas in the "traditional" way--Christmas tree,
cookies, presents, Christmas crafts, stories, movies, stringing
popcorn, etc.
This year we're also celebrating Hanukkah. We got a menorrah, made
latkes and applesauce, watched the animated hero classics video about
Macabees, and plan on making a dreidel tomorrow. We've been learning
about the Messianic significance of some of the old test. holidays.
It was during Hanukkah that Jesus stood up in the temple and declared
Himself to be the Light of the world! Jesus was also probably
conceived on Hanukkah (and probably NOT born in December!)

Christmas Eve. That's how we always did it when I was little. Now we do
it both ways. Dinner and presents here on Christmas Eve, then dinner and
presents on Christmas Day with Rod's family.

No but would appreciate any recipes that would be a holiday "package." We
do everything from wines and beers to hors d'orfs, to entre, to dessert and
of course traditional cookie gifts.
We've done Russian, English, Scots, Irish, French, Swedish, Portugese
(actually, Azores, dil parents are from there), and a bunch of Scandanavian
things.

We're doing Christmas as always. We do all the traditional stuff -- a tree with lights, beads, favorite ornaments and candy canes, a Nativity scene on the piano top, and so many lights outside that my neighbors need shades. <G> (Last night, dh added a red, white and blue lit Christmas tree out front, his latest creation.)
Christmas Eve is reading from the bible, and reading "Twas the Night.." with cookies/milk/carrots for Santa and the reindeer, and opening gifts that were sent in the mail. Christmas day is celebrating the reason for the day, as well as opening gifts, and seeing family members and friends...and eating a lot of good food :)

that LIKED fruitcake. I was utterly shocked... And trust me, it was one
of those questions that I would invariably ask people since I was 20.
Curiosity, you know? And after I was forced to taste one at gathering, I
understood why it was the butt of jokes on TV and radio.
I liked the jello layers that I've had. Funny how one person's poison is
another's ambrosia.

This holiday I'll be driving home from Canada and look forward to
sleeping in my own bed. Unfortunately our house will be Christmasless
since I won't be there to fix it up, and I don't want to do it after the
fact. And forget about asking the manthing to do it.. thats a lesson in
futility! LOL
In fact, I think the gigantic spider web is still strung across the
living room with this great big ole' furry spider in it.. maybe I'll put
the presents under that!
Life is good.

Hi Lynda,
So what kind of German foods are you having? I look forward every Christmas
to the Christstollen that my brother's in-laws send to my dad from Dresden,

We had a friend who is from Germany make us up a menu with options (for
example we went with the potato pancakes instead of the mashed potatoes) and
this is what we choose.
Schinken en Teig (Ham in Croute [crust])
Achwetzinger Stangenspargel (Asparagus with nutmeg])
Brokkoli mit Käse (Broccoli au gratin, sorta)
Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes with apple compote)
Fruchtsalat (Fruit salad)
Kandierte süsse Kartoffeln (Kinda like candied yams)
Monhnbrotchen & Kummelstangen (Poppy & Caraway-Seed Rolls)
DESSERT:
Bayerische Creme (Bavarian Creme with raspberry sauce)
Apfle mit Streuseln (Apple Crumble, kind of a deep dish apple pie with a
struesle/crumb topping)
COOKIES (we give some away in tins every year)
Springerles, Spekulatius, Lebkuchens
And hubby has to have some Italian goodies, Biscottis and Panganis.
Oh, and we have to have homemade cranberry sauce.

Bring your sleeping bags, we're out of room on the beds and couches. The
more the merrier.
I'm one of those weird folks that likes to cook for bunches. When I first
got married to hubby #1 we use to have my mother and step dad, my sister and
her current significant other and sometimes her ex's, my dad and step mom,
her son, my in-laws, my sil and her current and all her ex's and her five
kids, mil's brother and any friends who didn't have a family to do the
family thing with.
We only have us now.

therapys and high quality chinese medicine.
I guess since its socialized medicine, there isn't a threat that
someone's practice is at stake and the laws are more relaxed.
In the past, I have been to germany and england to seek therapy. Never in
Mexico, i guess I just don't know anyone there!

Hmmm, wonder when they started using grapes. they use to buy the
gooseberries from farmers with coastal farms from northern CA and points
north up the Pacific coast. My cousins had a ranch that sold them to them.
Lynda, off to track down when they changed.

We had a giant spider web on our porch one year. At Christmastime,
Spidey got a santa hat. But the neighbors didn't like it at easter
when the spider 'caught' a bunny and wrapped him in silk (batting) so
that only his ears showed!

Hi,
There's a Christmas story from Germany and the Ukraine that says that
tinsel/garland on Christmas trees came from the spiders' webs on them being
changed from plain to sparkly. Some people put a spider decoration on their
tree.

Lynda, dear... they changed to grapes when some desperate mother
didn't have any GOOSEBERRIES and the guest had already arrived! :-)
(duh... thinking Lynda just had a blonde moment... no offense to any
blondes on the list... just an expression I hear from my teen all the
time).
