Hello everyone!
Another college you may want to investigate is Empire State College
(www.esc.edu). They have a distance learning option and will tailor a
degree program to suit your needs. They will also give a lot of credit for
previous college experience and life experiences (personal and
professional). They require you to work with a mentor, instead of an
advisor, who will help you design a curriculum. Instead of
professors/teachers you work with a tutor (their faculty have quite
prestigious educations) and almost never in a classroom. As a division of
the State University of NY they are fully accredited. My father earned an
AS with them and I have taken a class through the center for distance
leaning. Since investigating HSing for my children I have often thought ESC
would be a great option for HSers.
I should introduce myself. I have three children 11, 6, and 19 mo. This
will be our first year homeschooling. We came to this decision after
trying for two years to get our local school district to provide what my
6yr old needed. He does not learn traditionally without great effort but
learns well one on one. His IQ scores are in the gifted range and he did
not qualify for LD services. We were given the option of having him labled
emotionally disabled because he becomes so easily frustrated.
We refused so they pulled together a bunch of "in-house services" including
occupational therapy (delay in and difficulty writing), reading recovery
(he was a reading level 2 in Jan. and worked up to a 19 (slightly above
average among his peers) by May with one on one instruction) and he also
worked with a speech therapist (truly needed) and they had him see an early
intervention specialist (for "anger" problems (frustration is more accurate
if you ask me). The end result is a beautiful little boy who thinks he is
stupid and was showing many physical symptoms of stress at the end of this
school year.
I believe unschooling will work the best for him however in NY we are
required to file an individualized home instruction plan (IHIP) for
approval by the school superintendent. Many ,from what I have read on the
net, who live in NY do well with this in districts that tend to overlook a
lot. Ours does not. It is notoriously HS unfriendly and I have not been
able to find anyone who unschools in this district. Those that I know of
who have had difficulty here followed curriculums (saxon, sonlight, konos,
etc). I'm not sure how to go about unschooling here. Any advice would be
very, very welcome.
