kid is great except when he gets a severe cold. I didn't realize asthma
could be an on-again, off-again thing.

Thanks,

Sonia

Yes, this is correct. One of my daughters struggles with her asthma all the
time, but the other two have what is refered to as "cold-induced asthma".
They only have problems when they have colds. There are a few instances
where asthma is an on again off again thing. There is exercise induced
asthma, allergy induced asthma, and asthma that only gets set off by certain
triggers, such as cigarette smoke. For a lot of people with asthma, all of
these things are issues, for others it's only one or a certain combination
of them. My eldest has to have a cold AND then get running around or be
exposed to an allergen (like dust or mold) before she gets bothered. My
middle has it the worst and she's only daily controller meds as well as has
a rescue inhaler. My youngest is strictly with colds, but unlike the eldest
it only takes that to set her off, not that AND something else. Boy, my
hand's tired now. :-) Sorry I went on so long, but asthma's a complicated
thing. Just let me know if you have any other?s.

Hi. It's no bother. Diagnosing ashtma in kids that young is not very
scientific. It's mostly based on symptoms you tell the dr., family history,
and if the meds bring relief. This last one is a biggie since, like someone
else pointed out, things like croupe don't affect the lungs, therefore
asthma meds wouldn't help. Also, if your pediatritian actually hears a
wheze, because again, things like croupe don't cause that very distinct
wheze. There are some web sites that have self tests that seem to be pretty
acurate. Of course they're not a substitute for a doctor, but they can let
you know if you think you're on the right track. Actually, doing one of
these test for my youngest daughter, was what made me think I might have
ashtma. I thought "this sounds like me" and sure enough I do. I hope I've
been of some more help to you. Good LUck and let me know.
