And a difficult time isn't an excuse to lean on children for emotional support.
I think about this when we hear so many stories of families having financial problems. Yes, kids needs to know about the reality of your money situation but they don't need to know every gritty, frightening detail and they don't need to be made to feel responsible.

If he's feeling stressed, too, that could be the last thing he wants to hear (I don't know him, though, this is just me thinking back to My mother saying "I want help" to a dd who was feeling overwhelmed already!).
