I think Ren was just asking for clarification, not telling you you were doing anything wrong.
Personally I read the "helping me" as a vocal emphasis. Some people use italics, or bold font or asterix (asterii? lol) to emphasize words rather than quotations so as not to cause confusion. Think of how they are used in these sentences.
Margaret is a *really nice* person.
Margaret is a "really nice" person.
