Homeschooling an only
trektheory
I'm planning another article, this time on homeschooling an only.
(Those of us -- and I'm one -- who do are a minority in the
homeschooling community.) I was wondering if anyone would be willing
to share with me some of the pluses, minuses, difficulties, solutions,
whatever you can think of (I might not think of the category, after
all!). Thanks!

I'd gladly provide input if you can give me a little direction as to
what kinds of things you're looking for - with a never been schooled
only, we've got 8 1/2 YEARS of stuff and that'd probably be a little too
long for just one article LOL Do you want to focus more on the social
aspects of having an only (how to find other kids, how to balance
parents' needs with being the "main" playmate much of the time,
"sharing", etc) or "academics" or whatever? I could write TONS of stuff
(DH often says when DS is grown, we should write a book!) but I'd rather
have it more succinct and targeted than just scatter shot stuff that
you'd need to winnow through.

Deb, those are all valid aspects of homeschooling an only. When we
started out, we lived in a neighborhood that wasn't exactly brimming
with potential playmates (an understatement!), and we have a fairly
social son, so the social side was a very real concern. Also, prior
to beginning, I read up on homeschooling, every book I could lay hands
on at the library, and so many of them waxed poetic at the benefits of
homeschooling a large brood, implying that if you didn't have multiple
children, it would be at best a detriment.
So, any ramblings you have are worth my winnowing through. For all I
know, you may trigger a different chain of thought in me! (One never
knows where these things lead; that's part of the fun of it! I
previously did one on the benefits of homeschooling, and heard some
responses that I never had considered. Really cool stuff.)

I have two onlies. Eight years separate them. I'd be happy to
contribute.
I do better with a Q&A scheme though.
