INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY BE JUST TWO DAYS AWAY!
September 19th -- this Tuesday -- be International Talk Like A
Pirate Day! Thank ye
kindly to the more'n 5,000 pirates who already be signin' up for
this fine list. In
this email, there be notice o' some charity work we be doin', a
chance to see Cap'n
Tom live (p'raps), as well as some advice fer students, teachers,
media folks, the
blasted governmental lackeys, an' those pesky bloggers!
It be worth readin' to the end, 'cos I be stickin' a pirate joke there
an' all.
***
MAD CAP'N TOM LIVE: This year, I be honoured to be a guest o'
the Southampton Boat
Show, who be workin' wi' the Jubilee Sailin' Trust charity an' their
Eye Patch Day.
It be pirate themed, an' it be happenin' this comin' week, so the
whole thing be a
natural fit! There be a whole pirate section for li'l 'uns, an' this
year, I be
sailin' down there meself to be presentin' the whole day from the
Show!

***
ARE YE IN THE MEDIA? Why not get an article in yer paper or
program on Pirate Day -
Mad Cap'n Tom be available fer interviews, ye know, an' it be a
great way to liven
up yer Tuesday show. Already, we be 'avin interest! Parley wi' the
Cap'n an' send
yon email to capntom@... forthwith!
(If ye 'appen to KNOW a media lackey, gi'em a tip or two an' tell
'em to get in
touch. A quick poke wi' a cutlass oft loosens their tongue.)
***
DO SOME GOOD DEEDS FER A CHANGE: This year, we be
teamin' up wi' both the Jubilee
Sailin' Trust, an' Marie Curie Cancer Care. If ye think ye can 'elp --
even if it
just be dressin' up in an eyepatch, speakin' like a pirate an'
plunderin' the
wallets o' those at yer local tavern -- give it a shot!
http://www.jst.org.uk/
http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/pirate/
***
PIRATE PARTIES: Are ye thinkin' o' carousin' round yer local inn,
hostin' a pirate
party, or dressin' up in full regalia an' paintin' the town red? Be
sendin' me an
email at capntom@... , an' I be tellin' the world about it
early on Tuesday
morn!
***
ARE YE A STUDENT? Then why not print out some o' the fine
posters available at
www.yarr.org.uk an' spread 'em around yer campus or school?
Talk Like A Pirate Day
be a fantastic way to annoy all yer teachers when they be bored
on a Tuesday
mornin'!
ARE YE A TEACHER? Then what better way to keep yer students'
interest than be addin'
in a little pirate talk to yer lectures. Or, if ye be teachin' littler
pirates, then
why not use the Day as a way to teach 'em about history (the
pirate era), geography
(the Caribbean), maths (if twenty pirates have forty pieces of
eight, then...) or
science (this be how a cannon works)?
***
ARE YE IN GOVERNMENT? Now, there have been a few .gov
addresses signin' up fer this
here list, from all o'er the globe. Why not try an' get yer elected
officials to
mark Pirate Day in some way? Perhaps ask a question to yer
Prime Minister and add
"yarrr" to the end o' it? Or p'raps a proclamation for the day? Arr,
we can but
hope.
***
ARE YE A BLOGGER? Linky us! The site be www.yarr.org.uk !
***
ARE YE NONE O' THESE? Then why not just tell yer friends.
Email 'em, call 'em, set
up a pirate party, whate'er ye wish! Just stay true to the spirit o'
the Day an
remember to pillage, plunder an' pirate on September 19th!
***
An' now, as promised, a PIRATE JOKE:
Q: Why can the pirates not be playin' cards?
A: Because the captain be standin' on the deck.
***
Now, I be off - I be sailin' the waters o' the Danube at the
moment, an' while the
locals be friendly, I mus' be settin' sail fer the port o'
Southampton. If ye can be
pokin' a media lackey, bloggin' the day, or persuadin' yer prime
minister to yell
'arr'... well, best o' luck to ye!
An' smooth sailin' to ye all!

Oops. Just went to the website and realized that Mad Cap'n Tom is head of the British Talk Like A Pirate contingent. Here's the history of the thing:
International Talk Like A Pirate Day began in the mists of the 1990s, when two Yankees, John Baur (Ol' Chum Bucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), be talkin' like pirates all o'a sudden. They decided that, to further the noble causes of the sweet trade of piracy, September 19 each year be the day when all souls over the world should be talkin' like pirates. For years, their valiant efforts were wasted, until they contacted a man by the name of Dave Barry, who be writin' a humour column for the great masses o' landlubbers out yonder.
So it's Ol' Chum Bucket and Cap'n slappy that are me neighbors.

Did anyone see this family on Wife Swap tonight? I never watched
this show but happened to catch it tonight and Cap'n Tom and family
were one of the two families. It was hilarious!!

Hey, I came in late to the show. Were the pirate family home/unschoolers???
I never saw anything mentioned about school.
I usually avoid these shows, but my husband was watching it and it reminded
me a bit too much of our own life. DH *is* the plastic organized family. :)

School was not mentioned at all but I can't imagine them sending
their kids to school. What a family! LOL!!The only thing that
grossed me out was the fleas.

I did just read her account of what happened (linked from the pirate day
website) and she said that the kids don't use the er, saucy language around
teachers.
So, they probably do go to school.
I can't believe I'm saying this....I wish I hadn't missed the first half of
WifeSwap!
I didn't like end though where they fight and badmouth each other. :{

Yes, they looked like such a fun family but the flees grossed me out, too.
I don't think they go to school... one of the girls mentioned sleeping in
until noon if she wanted to... I surprised that they didn't mention that on
the show... they always like to make homeschoolers stick out like a sore
thumb.
