Outlands Principality Petition
NOTES ON THE PETITION FOR
OUTLANDS PRINCIPALITY STATUS

[Prepared for the celebration of the Outlands' fifth year as a kingdom,
in the reign of TRM Irel and Tess,
by Mistress Ælflæd of Duckford]

The Outlands became a principality at its first coronet tournament, at Grand Outlandish in 1977 (A.S. XII). Although the board had met and approved the advancement just at the time of "Grand Outrageous," the fall tournament which was held in the north, it hadn't been advertised as a coronet tournament and so the victor (Stephan of Strathglyde) was the last Lord of the Outlands, rather than the first prince.

Goldenveldt was Ft. Collins, and the name was usually spelled Goldenveld (no "t").

Argel may not have been Pueblo/Arquelle; it may have been Evergreen.
Pueblo was considering itself part of Dragonsspine. (Clarifications or corrections would be happily received by Ælflæd.)

Varazhezy was Boulder, but the group died out before Caer Galen people came along.

The five knights were:
Ton the Traveller (knighted 8/19/72, in the Sun)
Raymond the Quiet (5/24/75, knighted in al-Barran)
Theodric ap Breken Beaken (5/25/75, Caerthe)
Bren Malokai (7/25/75, originally of al-Barran, later of Caerthe)
and Bardric Leonis (8/23/75)

The member of the Order of the Laurel was Mistress Margaret of Griffin Tower, of Caerthe. Although the first aurel made in the [region of the] Outlands was Ivan the Gross (al-Barran), he had moved to the Sun, and Margaret was made a laurel in June 1976. Before the principality status was granted, Rodema de Roham (originally of Tir Ysgithr and then of al-Barran), was made a laurel, in October. At the first coronet tournament Irminsul the Improbable (al-Barran) was made a laurel.

By the time the Outlands became a principality, Lonely Mountain was an established and active group.

Although Great River is as old a group as Caerthe is, and older than al-Barran, they did not wish to be a part of the Outlnads, and indeed considered themselves to be even outside Atenveldt. They were a freehold, they told everyone, and not under any other SCA group. That lasted them for only a few years more. They accepted advancement at the hand of an Atenveldt king, and later Countess Bevin Fraser of Stirline, when she was steward, mapped the whole Society out, assigning unclaimed states to one kingdom or another, drawing the borders all the way to the Mexican border, and informing us that every local group was responsibility of a kingdom, and none were to report to or deal directly with the board except kingdoms.

The original petition is 19.25 x 24.25" and was the work of Michael the Literate of Caerthe, who became inactive within about a year of the Outlands becoming a principality.

The petition was being stored with difficulty various places in northern California. The SCA, Inc. having no place for oversize storage in those days, it was given into the keeping of Ælflæd of Duckford in 1985. The wet climate there was not good for something done in water soluble inks, and the illumination was done partly or wholly with felt-tip pens.

A facsimile of the petition first appeared in the May issue of The Outlandish Herald with many of the notes which appear above.

Respectfully submitted

June A.S. XXVI (1991)

This page was created in honor of it having been thirty years since the Outlands became a principality, soon. And in June, we will have had twenty-one years of kingdom status.

The image above is a photograph. If I can get a more professional and flatter image, I will replace those above, but for now they're the best that's been, because in 1991 we had a black and white photocopy. The smaller can be clicked to reveal a larger image than the one above. The petition itself was taken to the SCA's fifth year celebration, but no place was provided for its display, so it was not seen by all there.
