Hi, I just recently learned of unschooling and it totally sounds like what I want to do with my son(he is 2 months old, starting early ;-D). I was kind of worried how to fit Radical Unschooling with our religion (which has a bunch of rules) but then I realized religious rules would be ok. The whole family has to follow the religious rules as opposed to just the children following the parental rules. Its fair because "everyone" has to follow the rule, not just some.

I can understand how unschooling works because I've kind of done it, even though I went to public school. 10th grade I was into X-Men comics & my favorite character was Gambit. Gambit is Cajun & that got me interested in drawing/painting the character, card tricks, and Cajun culture & music. The culture & music got me interested in french. Half-way through the school year I borrowed a first year french book from the french teacher & studied on my own. She let me take the end-of-year exam & I got 80% on it. Took french the next two years too. :-)

Also, more recently, reading on the internet about journaling lead to finding out about a book called "Wreck This Journal", which lead to altered art books, which led to mail art & ArtistStamps, which led to both Artist Trading Cards & micro-nations. I want to actually try some of that stuff when we finally move back to the US, we are currently living with my husbands family in northern Iraq.

I can't wait until my son is old enough to do stuff with. Play Super Mario World (I have a SNES) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katamari_Damacy" target="_blank">Katamari Damacy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katamari_Damacy (PS2) or go to the library or the Zoo or whatever he likes. But I know I need to enjoy being with him now too, he won't be little forever.

Laurie

(If I wander away from the forums for a long time I'm sure I'll be back when he is 3 or 4!)

Welcome, Laurie! I liked your examples of how unschooling works!

The whole family has to follow the religious rules...

Just a thought on this: Try shifting your thinking to "The whole family chooses to follow the religious rules..." You follow them because they are meaningful to you, right? Don't belittle that by thinking of them as something you "have to" do. If it's a joyous choice, live and think and act like it is.

If you share joy in your religion with your son, he is much more likely to be a willing participant in the routines and rites that your religion calls for. Otherwise, it's going to come across as this onerous burden, something that's being shoved down his throat, and you'll rob him of the chance to find his own joy in your beliefs.
