The Progress of Artan VI and Aziza

Write to me at [email protected] with additions, corrections, notes or suggestions, please.

Royal Progress

In the Middle Ages, royalty used to "go on progress" sometimes, visiting their liegemen in their own homes. It's a little like what happens when Kings and Queens go to events. What's more, at least in the real world kings have a house. In the SCA, though, each event is in a barony or a shire. Court is not actually in the home of the King and Queen, as it was and sometimes still is where royalty still reside mundanely, or in famous non-palatial home offices such as 1600 Pennsylania Avenue, 24 Sussex Drive or 10 Downing Street. Very long ago, the Principality of the Outlands seemed to have 8116 Princess Jeanne, where Bohemond lives now. :-) The first three princes (Gunwaldt, Heinrich and Wilhelm) all lived there, and some official baronial events were held there.

Because the Queen can't retire to her own chambers to have a break from an event, we need to try to create safe, private and familiar spaces for her.

We will be creating illusion, and reality, and maintaining the comfort and safety of Artan and Aziza while they are prince and princess, and during the reign of Artan VI.

Steward

If you want to see some references to royal progress in period, here are a few things:

PAST EVENTSwith notes and reviews added afterwards

October 6              His Royal Highness
Pas d'Armes
Readstan (Caerthe)

Baroness Anne will be there.

October 14               Their Royal Highnesses
Stagscon, Blaiddwyn (al-Barran)

Her Highness attended the meeting with barons and then left before court. His Highness was attended by Mordygan and by Duke Olaf, serving as herald (whose duties were to wear a tabard, and to receive and hold a scroll, but he did it very well).

Tancred and Temuqai will be in attendance, but as the Crown will be there, attendance of TRH should be very lightly and discreetly handled.
Anne will be there too. Balthazar

Mordygan's shift as champion will not have kicked in yet.

others?

October 21               Their Royal Highnesses
Caerthen A&S

Her Royal Highness attended the afternoon of Caerthen Arts and Sciences, and was attended by Lady Ansteys Darcy who helped Her Highness dress and prepare, and who attended her from time to time, which was generous and good, as she was also assisting now-Mistress Anne Bigod to prepare for her elevation to the Order of the Pelican.

Lord Kelsus and Lord Adam, guardsmen, both were presented to Her Highness by the Blue Iris Herald, Don Charles. Both attended in light ways, as appropriate, and Adam stood behind the thrones.

Anne will NOT be attending TRH, as she is being made a Mistress of the Pelican that weekend.

AElflaed will be there. Anne will have arranged for a couple of more local ladies to attend just for the event, but again, as this is an event at which TRM Bela and Claudia will be, attendance on Her Highness should be stealth-like and seemingly minimal. Ideally, the queen's ladies in waiting will cover that, or perhaps the Baron and Baroness will host in such a way that TRH will be attended. If so, we should be just part of the background. It's a visit in someone else's court, in someone else's barony.

October 28-29                     His Royal Highness
Estrella War Treaty Negotiations, Atenveldt

Charles attended

November 11                TRH/Their Royal Majesties
Coronation, Gleann Medonach

Don Charles (running Protector tournament on Sunday)
Sir Mordygan, Mistress AElflaed, Master Balthazar, Lord Vladimir
Countess Matilda

Sir Lavan (entering Queen's Champion)
Sir Zachariah, available after morning court on Saturday (leaving Sunday morning)

GUARDSMEN: Lord Tancred, Lord Geoffrey, Lord Tomas, Lord Etienne, Ylyndl
Maybe Nicholas Fenix; if so, entering the Protector of the Queen`s Heart Tournament.

LADIES: Mistress Anne Bigod (until Sunday noon), Baroness Constance, Lady Ansteys Darcy, Lady Jamilia, Lady Melodia, Temuqai Checheng

Some guardsmen might want to enter tournaments, so others should be ready to take those shifts to free them up.

One guardsman at a time is sufficient, although at the beginning it might be fun and worthwhile to have two, at times, so that you can experiment with what and how you want to do things. Within parameters given, you have creative license and we want you to use your own judgment.

The King, to the Lord Chamberlain and Steward of the Royal Household

Trusty and Well beloved, We greet you well.

We are right pleased with the service of Our attendants at the coronation ceremonies and tournaments. Her Majesty's Herald, Guard Captain, and Chief Lady in Waiting were exemplary in their attendance and maintenance, as were their charges.

Our private goose lunch left us full and satisfied and happy We were crowned King on Saint Martin's day.

Please let Our Household know of our deepest appreciation for their kind and attentive assistance, as well as their genuine gift of time and service.

By Our hand, this 13th day of November in the twenty first year of the sovereignty of the Outlands.

[From AElflaed, quoting others at first]

From the Blue Iris Herald (Baron Charles--for those who weren't there, Don Charles is now a baron of the court):

"From my perspective, I had all the help I needed to make Courts go smoothly and my tournament run well. The Ladies-in-Waiting were organised and got me what I needed on time.

"I'd like to thank Countess Matilda for getting those ceremonies prepared, written up and there. That made my job as easy as it possibly could be. :) "

From the Lord Chamberlain (Master Balthazar):
"I thought that all of the ladies were very good, and very diligent. I thought that Lord Tancred worked very hard, and was in very good spirits about it the whole weekend."
Mistress Anne is out of town, Lord Tancred is still at work, and so we might have comments from them directly later, but for my part it seemed people were pretty cheerful about the work they were doing (especially the Captain of the Guard), and I wanted to thank you all for the patience with the schedule changes and the wind and the kind- of-cold. The cheerfulness of the guardsmen and of all the ladies made everything better for many more people than just their Majesties.

Occasionally one of the attendants would check on other attendants. That was nice. Thanks.

I stepped in a hole and fell. Geoffrey came and checked on me and marked the hole. Thank you. (A handkerchief came in handy; he found a branch, tied the handkerchief on, and stuck it in the hole so others were safe.)

Charles handled the introductions beautifully, even though we kept being rescheduled. I'm sorry that didn't go as ideally as I had envisioned it, but it went!

Sir Lavan was ever-helpful even though his duties are vague-to-none, so Lavan, your help was especially generous.

The aforementioned goose dinner was made by His Lordship, Vladimir, the king's senior squire. The geese involved were killed by Sir Cathyn the week before, and I forwarded a copy of the King's thanks to Cathyn as well....

November 18th, Saturday               King and Queen present
Fontaine's Toy Box & Baronial Polling, Fontaine dans Sable

Sir Mordygan, Don Charles, Master Balthazar,
Lord Dermod

Lady Dubheasa (Queen's Equerry) did not attend after all

Countess Elizabeth O'Byrne attended the event and volunteered to serve as secretary to the Crown during the polling, and assisted Blue Iris behind the thrones during court.

A local lady named Emeline Aglionby, a member of only eight or nine weeks, was very helpful to the retinue by finding local people Balthazar nor Charles knew, brought food to Their Majesties where they were taking counsel of the populace, and her daughter played with Jacob during the afternoon. This service should be noted.

November 19th, Sunday               King and Queen present
al-Barran Toys for Tots

Sir Mordygan
Master Balthazar, Don Charles, Mistress AElflaed
Lady Melodia and Temuqai attended her Majesty
Lord Tomas served as guardsman.

Govanen and Chinua attended the Queen as well. Chinua did a lot of carry and set-up.

Tancred and Ylyndl were there but involved in the Toys for Tots Tournament (which is fine and good).

Lord Dermod was present; Bardolf was made a squire and so added to the retinue.

December 2              His Majesty
Festival of Lights, Windkeep

Don Charles, Sir Mordygan
Cameron de Blakstan (co-autocrat, and the Queen isn't attending)
Anne Bigod
Matilda, Lavan, Bardolf

The basket should go there with the King's party and be picked up on the other end by Anne. As the Queen's not attending, it's just a transfer point, and it will be ready then for Caer Galen, al-Barran, Caerthen Twelfthnight...

All went as planned except for the flat Sunday morning which kept the King and his party from attending the Caerthen Cook's Guild Christmas singing and cookie-making party.

December 9               TheirMajesties
Caer Galen Midwinter
Sir Mordygan, Master Balthazar, Mistress Kate Holford
Lord Tancred, Lord Kelsus, Lord Cameron, Lord Mustafa, Lord Geoffrey
Lady Anne Bigod, Lady Ansteys Darcy, Lady Mabbina

Countess Matilda, taking care of TRM children
Don Charles might be there, but later

"The Hankie MacGuiver" story, and Kate wrote "[T]he Queen's Guards (all of them but especially Tancred and Geoffrey) were wonderful at Caer Galen. Things seemed to go very smoothly all day, so credit is definitely due all the entourage who worked so hard to take care of things."

December 17               Their Majesties

This went well, except for failure to set up the throne. That was discussed on the retinue list and nobody was in trouble, it just makes for a checklist item for the future.
