Yes! Me too.

Some things I want to learn/do:

be a lactation consultant
to speak Spanish fluently (I learned in high school, but I've forgotten most of it)
to create a website
to write for publication
to be a better parent to my children
design/draft our own home someday
sew actual clothes -- not just mending and slings (first I need a machine, I guess)
grow herbs -- maybe for next year's garden

I'm sure more things will cross my path, and I'm more confident every day that I'll be able to learn them!

I left school, always an A student, with no desire to be taught anything else. I just wanted to be left alone and I was so tired of being told how smart I was, like that was some obligation to spend my life doing what they wanted me to do to make them proud. Maybe that explains the next 5 yrs spent in non-office jobs and a bad marriage! I was determined to be a non-achiever.

Thanks for the question, Sandra! It's been fun to explore how much of real life is learned away from a building and enforced structure.

Ha! I just started reading about earthships, 'off the grid' houses built from tires and earth. But I think I'll go for an earth bermed concrete block home (my FIL is a bricklayer and my DH is pratically a journeyman, cheap labour!). The power limitations in a self contained earthship are too much for a family that loves it's computer, TV, dvd, vcr, etc. :)I'm reading all I can and already thinking that when it comes time to get an architect to customize house plans, maybe I could barter something for his help. This is what unschooling has done to me. It lets me see all the different paths to a goal instead of limiting me to 1 or 2 that I have to nix.
If you see any neat related webites in your studies Kristen, let me know!

> What a GREAT thread this is! Thank you Sandra for starting it.

I sit and think about all the things I've learned and then think about
all the things I keep telling myself that I want to learn or do, and
realize that I'm stuck in the old rut of NOT doing these things because
of this or that. I find that I get so busy cleaning the house,
cooking, taking care of the kids or husband, getting ready for the new
baby, unpacking from a recent move and whatever else comes along, that
I'm not doing anything fun! How boring I've become. Time to get out
and start doing things for me.

It's fun to see what everyone else wants to do with their life. I'll
have to think on mine for awhile. My husband has always felt that
since we have kids, we shouldn't be doing anything for ourselves
(especially me, since I'm the one who takes care of them). Well, that
is going to have to change. I love unschooling with my kids, because
I get to unschool too!

We just bought 200 acres and plan to build a completely off-grid cabin with
rainwater collection as the water source. I'm very excited.

Kelly, if the Live & Learn folks would bring their conference anywhere reachable from Albuquerque (or actually here) I'd help all I could with that. I'd love to go to the conference this year, but I'm just willing to travel to Boston in August (or any other time, for that matter). We may be in DC next July (LaLeche Intl conference) but it probably won't mesh with any other conferences.

Some exerpts from my Life List (I keep it as a Word doc on my
computer). The first five items I'm actively working on accomplishing
in the next couple of years and I have sub-goals for all of those.
The rest are in the 5+ year plan, which means I haven't really
started planning specifics for them yet.

- Be able to play the Celtic fiddle music that I love to listen to
- Publish my novel(s)
- Run all of our vehicles on non-gasoline fuels
- Complete a marathon and an Ironman-distance triathlon
- See Australia
- Climb Denali, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Aconcagua
- Get my instrument rating on my pilot's license
- Return to Tanzania as a volunteer for some length of time
- Learn Swahili
- Build a strawbale house
- Scuba dive in the Seychellese, Maldives, Costa Rica, Roatan
(endless list, really)
- Bicycle across the U.S.
- Exhibit my photography

Blue Skies,

Okay, this is what I want to do...

Unschooling/Live and Learn Confrence in San Diego Ca. End of Oct. 2006, complete with costume party.

If you have ideas, let me know. This is still in the planning stages, but i'd love to get thoughts and ideas from everyone!

I would like to BE a lactation consultant, but have run scared away
from the idea of becoming one. Thousands of hours of experience,
classes, thick textbooks, etc. Or is there a different path that
doesn't make me start having school nightmares again?? I just want to
know stuff and help people, darn it!

Will there be a 2005 conference, or will it skip a year? We can't go
this year - even though it's close to us. We're in Maryland, and we've
talked about planning a big trip (maybe 6 weeks or more) to see the
western part of the country. We could feasibly plan it to coincide with
San Diego / Oct 2006... that would be a blast!

We will likely be in the South Cali area -- maybe even San Diego -- for a big family reunion in 2006, sadly it's likely to be in July or August to accommodate school vacation. That will be free to us, tho, so maybe we could swing another trip in October -- at least then we'd know the area.
