I'm a dog trainer planning a dog care class for kids. I'm looking
for picture books for 5-10 year olds about dogs that portray them in
a realistic light. I already have "Some Swell Pup" by Sendak as an
intro. Books can be fiction or non-fiction and on any doggy topic
but well written. Anyone have any good suggestions?

My kids enjoyed Talk to Your Dog by Jean Craighead George, Paul Meisel
(Illustrator), Sue Truesdell (Illustrator). It's about using your body
language (and the dog's) to communicate with your dog. Deirdre

What about Lynley Dodd's books? (the Hairy MCclarey series) The
language is so rich, it rhymes, beautiful illustrations, real
situations. Wonderful stuff! :)

Holly Furgason

That sounds perfect. Thanks!

Those are wonderful.

Not as realistic, but good art, are those about the big black uh... (what's
that big black dog? Bigger than a lab, some brown... blanking totally) ...
that carries the baby around when the people aren't home. It's really sweet.
Fictional situation, but really good art.

Hi

I'm new here but wanted to jump in here as my oldest daughter's favourite
subject is animals, dogs in particular. Her suggestions of good dog books
are:
"Jess the Border Collie" series by Lucy Daniels
"Floss" and "Just Like Floss" by Kim Lewis
"The Puppy Book" by Camilla Jessel
"The Boxcar Children, Guide Dog Mystery" by Gertrude Chandler Warner
I hope there are useful for you.

I'll send an intro soon :)

One of our favorite dog books is called My Puppy Is Born, by Joanna Cole. Actual photographs of a pup being born, nursing etc. Sweet.
