Listening to an interview of David McCullough "1776" on the Diane Rehm show, I caught a bit of his telling that he uses a typewriter to write his books. He said that he "doesn't know how" to type, so does it slowly, but his typing speed is compatible with his thinking while he is writing. He also said that he fears if he used a computer that he would push the wrong button and delete stuff by accident.

This ties into the idea that there are certain things people "have to learn" in order to be successful. McCullough is a very successful author without mastering the computer or learning "correct" keyboarding.

Good points!

Paul McCartney couldn't read music until he learned when he was 40 or so.
He did okay.

Holly said just a couple of days ago that she now types as fast as she
speaks.

Yeah, I guess he had one or two hit records <wink>

Oh, I just remembered. I was at a grocery store during the most recent Superbowl. There was a TV playing near the cash register. I knew it was after half time, and asked a young woman working there if she had enjoyed Paul McCartney in the half-time show. She didn't know who he was! (gasp!)

We just sort of let it be known that we were looking for a typewriter
and somehow people came up with them. Somebody had one sitting in their
garage. Another was found at a thrift store.

Garage sales. I've seen many. And they're usually electric.

I'm new to the list, so I will post an intro later and get to know all of you, but I wanted to add Freecycle.org to the mix.

I belong to a couple of local freecycle groups, and I often see electric typewriters up for grabs. Just a suggestion...here's the link: http://www.freecycle.org/

I love freecycle. I just got into building old computers for running DOS games (before Christmas I wouldn't have been surprised if fairies ran my computers and then ust yesterday I tore apart and fixed a Pentium III 533 mhz for my daughter. I'm so proud!) and there are tons of people giving away old computer stuff. I even got a Vic 20 and Commodore 64 for my tiny classic computer collection. The stuff up for offer can range from picture frames to mobile homes.

Dawn (Who mentioned she actually took apart and fixed a PC, right? :) )

My daughter has a wonderful old 1920's black
typewriter that we found at an estate sale for $10.

My dad had an ancient old black typewriter that I think he had in high
school (he's 78)...I should call him and see if he still has it!! He typed letter
to us for years. He finally got a computer and now sends emails about 4
times a week. He's so cute, cause he makes the letter really big, and with
color, and a colored background...he really gets creative!!

very much money!!

Check to see if there is a freecycle list in your area. People post things that they are wanting to get rid of. My local list has a rule that you must post an offer of something before you can post a wanted. Everything is free, you just have to go pick up the item.
