Hi, my name is Kelly. I have two girls Lexi, 8 and Mariah 6. We
are brand new at this. I just pulled them out of public school
about 3 weeks ago. So far I LOVE having my girls at home. The
three of us are so much more relaxed. No more pressure over stupid
Homework that was just a bunch of busy work! Way more quality time
together.

Anyway I am new to "Unschooling", I really love the concept, but do
not fully understand it yet. For three weeks I have let my girls
set the tone, and I've just went along with it. My 8 year old
previously detested Math, and would cry over Math homework. Well
something miraculously has happened in just three weeks. She loves
Math, and does it for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day now.........all
on her own, and occasionally will ask me for help.

I'd love to hear about other's "Unschooling" experiences. I'd also
like to know how everyone meets their state requirements for
homeschooling, while unschooling. We live in SC and I think I will
meet the requirements and get the required subjects in, but I am not
entirely sure yet what I'm doing.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to UB and to unschooling. :-)

>>>I really love the concept, but do not fully understand it yet.>>>>

There's lots of information in the archives. Just start at the
beginning and read through them when you have extra time.

>>>She loves Math, and does it for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day
now.>>>>

I think if you read last months Unschooling Voices, which was about
changing your mindset about math, you'll see that math can't be done
in only a few hours a day. It's all around us. :-) Here's the link:
http://www.foreverparents.com/UnschoolingVoices.html
Scroll down to the bottom and click on Unschooling Math.

>>>>I'd love to hear about other's "Unschooling" experiences.>>>>

Here's the link to my blog if you'd like to check it out.
http://anunschoolinglife.blogspot.com/

>>>>I'd also like to know how everyone meets their state
requirements for homeschooling, while unschooling.>>>>

I moved to Florida (after being born and raised in NYC) and we have
the option of using a 600/non public school, which is a school in
name only. Our only requirements in attendence.

Welcome again....feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Please remember that no one has to DO math. It's *there*. Always.
Bake. Shop. Build. Play. Math is everywhere!

I wouldn't worry about anyone's state requirements other than your own
state's! Which is mine! <g> I'm in Columbia.

You might like to join School's Out Support---the SC unschooling
support group. There's a party (go figure! <g>) at my house on October
21---Halloween party! Join SOS check out the archives, and RSVP---we'd
love to meet you! [email protected] I think we're
expecting 20 unschoolers!!!

It's pretty easy to unschool here. Third Option, high school graduate,
accountability association, keep attendance, a portfolio, and show
progress. Easy-peasy!

You can call me for more info about SOS or SC. 803 776 4849

Hi Kelly, I joined SOS recently.......can't remember which day, but within the last week. I would love to come to the Halloween Party, but unfortunately I am having surgery on both of my knees on the 19th. So I'll be laid up for awhile. My Mother is flying in from Montana to take care of my girls while hubby is at work. Thanks for the warm welcome!
