I remember reading somewhere (I think!) about a group for unschooled
kids to chat to each other. Can anyone help me with this? My Son who is
10 is wanting to chat with other kids.

Thanks!
Amie

I don't think I have introduced myself yet. I am Mary and my husband, Gus,
and I have a 10-year-old son, Jake Henry. We live in Connecticut and I am a
co-leader for our unschooling group. Are there any radical unschoolers on
this list that live in CT? Please reply to me off list. I'd love to know
radical unschoolers in my state.

Welcome Mary :-)

Try the New England Unschooling list:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NewEnglandUnschooling/

Luz and Ned Vare are on there and have a group in CT. I think someone
recently posted a statewide inclusive group for CT. The list isn't
very busy so it should be easy to find in the archives.

My daughter tried to start a chat thing, but didn't get enough
response, so she dropped it. It was with chatzy. If we can get enough
people, she would start it up again. Or your son could start one up.
I know the kid board of unschooling.info is pretty active, but it's not
live. The only other ones that I know of are for homeschoolers and I
haven't been impressed with those ones. The platforms are yucky, and
my daughter didn't like them either.

We would be interested in doing this if your daughter decides to get
it going again. Keep us posted!

Thanks,
Amie

We've got skype, which is a GREAT way for kids to keep in touch and actually
*chat* -- which means the playing field is leveled between the typing and
non-typing sets :) All you need is a $10 mic or a $15 headset w/mic. It
leaves hands free to continue WoW or other game playing while still having a
conversation. One day Hayden was talking to kids from 4 different states at
the same time!
Skype.com <http://www.skype.com> it's a free download and easy to use. If
you've got it, you can search Hayden Jenner or HeyHay98 -- he's *always*
happy to have a new friend to talk to!! I personally love it because I can
talk to Schuyler in England for FREE!!! :) And to Kelli in Northern
Minnesota without wearing out our cell phone batteries :::bg:::

Schuyler

Linnaea uses Skype most nights to talk to her friend near Newcastle. There
are chat features and they can talk, they play World of Warcraft or Sims 2
or other things and talk about it. I really love the way Skype has allowed
their relationship to continue even after we moved. The Skype account with a
working microphone is schuyliz, the one without a working microphone, but
with the computer that is on much of the time is simonwaynforth, if anyone
wants to contact us via Skype.
