Has anyone here read the book "...and the children played" by Patricia
Joudry? It's an unschooling "classic" that I read over 12 years ago
and I cannot seem to find it anywhere for less than $150! I know that
playwrite Patricia Joudry is no longer alive, but I'm hoping I can get
them to re-publish this book, and I'm also curious about her
daughters' lives now...

I read long, long ago when John Holt was recommending it highly.
I even still have a copy :-). I remember when GWS was offering $3 for
any used copies trying to get more in circulation after it went out of
print. Just made me read it again and hold it close.

My first reading I think I was a tad nonplussed about the financial
instability and even critical of them living so large while spiraling down
financially. I have different "takes" when I read at different stages of
my own life.

I, too, would be interested in her children's lives. I did not know that
Joudry was no longer alive.

This was from a 1984 Master's thesis about Joudry:
http://www.lib.unb.ca/Texts/Theatre/joudry/Joudry%20-%20CHAPTER%20ONE.htm
"Four of Joudry's children now live independent lives: Gay (Mrs. Paul Gilbaud) is a kindergarten teacher at a Steiner school in France; Sharon (Mrs. Michael Martin) is a nurse in Oshawa; Stephanie, a classical pianist and computer programmer, resides in Warwick, England; Melanie, having completed training as a social worker, is a community worker in Australia. Felicity, Joudry's companion, assists with the house‑keeping."
This is her homepage, with her very long autobiography... http://www.lib.unb.ca/Texts/Theatre/joudry/index.htm
One of her children is busy with Sound Therapy: http://www.soundtherapyinternational.com/history_the_founders.htm#rafaele

The autobiography at the website Dar shared seems to encompass the text
of "...and the children played". I read the book several months ago and
a few chapters in the center that I skimmed in the website autobiography
were the same as the book.

I enjoyed the book from an unschooling perspective - I read it on the
tail end of a financially bleak year in our family so some of it hit a
bit too close to home for me, but very interesting, regardless.

I borrowed my copy of the book through the library in our new town, but
I know all libraries aren't so good at getting out-of-print copies. I'm
glad people don't have to pay $150 to read about Ms Joudry and her
family's out-of-the-ordinary experiences. Thanks for finding the info
about her family, Dar.
